so i did what you guys said to. the ramps are gone and so is the dust bath :) better?

p.s. i had to leave the middle one in cause they need it to get to the middle floor.
but they dont hop like crazy on that one anyways so no big deal on that one.

It looks much better Rachel. You could be a leaping ledge on the door, and get rid of the last ramp. I didn't realize yours were removable, the ones in my quarantine cage are attached.
Still unsure about that house. Can you find out what type of wood it is?

And the two of the girls cuddling in the tube together are just precious.

i didnt think about that. when i get more money im going to get more ledges and take the middle ramp out.
and they love the house. i tryed taking it apart and its not glued!! its nailed actually with tiny nails.

It's not the glue that will kill the chin, its the TYPE of wood. If it is plywood it is toxic. Also, the chins will eventually chew through the wood and expose the nails. I had that happen to me, and was horrified to find metal pieces holding the wood together. That can be very dangerous.

Honestly, I'd say chuck the house and get one that you know is safe. You can contact Linda at Simply chintastic - she makes incredible houses - no glue, no nails, with SAFE wood.

They're not talking about how the house itself is put together. They're wondering what type of wood the house is made out of. Because it looks like plywood which is made up of thin sheets of wood that are glued together with a toxic glue (it is toxic if ingested)

Yes the glue that is used contains formaldehyde resins.

Formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer in animals, but there is no definitive evidence linking the chemical to cancer in humans. Higher-than-normal levels of formaldehyde in the home atmosphere can trigger asthma attacks in individuals who have this condition. Other health hazards attributed to formaldehyde include skin rashes; watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, throat, and nasal passages; and breathing difficulties.

We aren't telling you it's safe to pick on you, we're telling you this because we CARE about your animals. If you don't believe what people are telling you...then do your own research on the internet or read the articles above. It's in black and white.

And as a side note, your attitude is really disturbing. You really should think twice before burning bridges on this forum...someday you may really need someones help with your chins...and you'll wish you would've checked your attitude at the door.

Actually, if the spacing on the ramps is 1/2" x 1/2" it is safe to leave them in.

That cage really does look great! And it's awesome that you have taken advice about the ledges/ramps. But I went to petsmart today and they had that exact house in the guinea pig enclosure, and it is plywood. They are very tiny sheets of wood pressed together to make each side of the house. That added on with the nails, it horrifies me that they would sell it. Houses aren't expensive, and you can get some downright nifty little houses for pretty cheap from people on here!

Also, those wood chunks also concern me. I just got a conure so I've been doing a lot of shopping in the bird aisle. I know that I got that for my bird, and when I went to petsmart I looked at that exact toy, figuring if it was safe to pick some up for my chins as well, and it says on the back "natural wood chunks". No where does it say what kind of wood. I asked the employee (not sure how much help I was expecting, lol), and he said if it doesn't say it on there, there's no way to tell. So, I'd just be very cautious and remove it as there are many woods toxic to chins. Just in the best interest of your baby!
You have done an amazing job on your cage, I'm sure he's very happy! :)

I think your cage set-up looks very nice, and your chinnies are very cute especially those 2 cuties snuggling in the tube! I just have to add that the colored playhouse in your cage is 100% plywood. Unfortunately, there are products out there that say chin safe or put a picture of a chinchilla on their label, but in fact they are not. I have learned alot on this forum and I do appreciate the advice given because that is why we are here in the 1st place, not just to share our wonderful pets but to also be open to learning more about them and to better take care of them. I had the exact same house, but tossed it after I found out that it is plywood. Here is the link to the ware website that manufactures these playhouses -

We just want your chins to be safe:)

You've gotta love that. I swear, who would think that was a good idea? Not just for chins but any animal?

The ramps and shelves are fine as long as it is half inch by half inch. I don't know of any chin that can get it's foot through that, unless it was super little. Baby chins might be in the danger but those chins look fairly grown. The spacing becomes a problem when it is larger than this. No chin has ever gotten it's foot stuck in this spacing that I have ever heard of. If someone claimed that they did, they would definitely have to prove it to me.
