My sister in law is giving me her chin bc she doesn't have time for it anymore, I've been researching chins for a couple days but the one thing I don't understand is chins and wood, I have pet rats so my thinking is,
wood + urine= NO. But all I keep reading about is chins needed wooden everything , do you have to constantly replace everything or am I missing something??

You can spray it down with a mixture of white vinegar and water to clean it (the wood) or you can use sand paper and sand off the urine. When it gets too bad, then you can dump it and get new.

Chin urine isn't like rat urine. Rat urine is really strong smelling everywhere they pee. Chins will smell strong after a while, but not like a rats does. Also, you can try teaching your chin to use a litter pan for the urine, that will really help keep the wood clean.

I have both chins and rats at the rescue, and while I definitely would say no regarding wood for rats, it's completely opposite for chins. Ideally, you want wooden shelves for them to hop on and chew on, and for the most part, they won't pee on the shelves. Some chins do pee on the shelves, but those are in the minority of the chins that we get at the rescue. Most don't, so the shelves don't have to be replaced until they're either chewed to death or need cleaning. And when ours need cleaning, I just take em outside, sand em, scrub em, and they're (almost) as good as new. But they're not like rats where they'll get peed on and get all sticky within a few days.
