I recently bought a chinchilla from a local pet store, I am unsure of how old he is but I know he is not full grown. He has been with me for almost a week now so he is starting to get used to his routine. Today, I came home from college and opened his door and let him play and hop around as usual. Well, he came in my room and got under my bed and just started grunting, I guess. I recognized the noise from some videos I watched while researching chins and most of the time it was a bad thing if they started making the noise. I'm a little worried that I may have done something wrong and would really appreciate some feedback so I can bond with my Gizmo and earn his trust!

Something got him going then. Hard to say what. They can hear things inside the room and outside. If he has only been with you a week, then you might wanna consider not letting him out for a while. Give him more time to adjust to his new envirnment and ppl. Its a whole new world for him, and they are generaly scared of it.

He was probably spooked by something. You should not let him have free roam of the house at all. He can and will chew on everything, which can be very harmful. Most people make a chin-safe area in their house for playtime, either a bathroom or extra room, or a playpen. Outside of cage time should always be supervised too. They are very quick and mischievous, better safe than sorry.

Our new female does that from her house with her head sticking out the top hole when the bigger dog is around. They were the only animals in their previous home whereas we have both an 80lb and 20lb dog. She's been doing it less and less. Now it's mostly in the morning when the dog comes out of the bedroom and passes the cages to get to her food and water before going back to the hallway to sleep all day. Every now and then instead of just some grunting she gets everyone to bark at the dogs. Who are trained to ignore small animals.

He doesn't have free roam. Haha the tile hallway is where he gets to play, its downstairs and has a door on either side of the hall. I have 2 cats as well so I don't particularly think it would be a good thing to let him roam by himself.
