In your opinion who's responsiblity is it to rescheduled a cancelled appointment--the person who cancelled the appointment, or the person scheduled the appointment?

Here's my situation--I had a test scheduled with my supervisor at work for 11/20/09 It had been scheduled at his request to review a system we deal with but not on a regular basis. He wanted to make sure everyone knew how to use it. He himself trained me on it and I used it on a regular basis to review and update documentation, however everyone else was tested so I had no problem with this.

The morning of the test he came in and said he couldn't give me the test because he needed to work on the Thanksgiving schedules (I knew he had somehow messed them up the day before but didn't rub this in lol!) Anyway he never rescheduled this test with me and that was that.

At my review he failed me on the test! I was hacked! I felt he should have rescheduled as he cancelled.

What do you guys think?

If I were in that situation, I would have expected that he reschedule the test... however, if I didn't hear from him within a certain amount of time (a few days to a week, probably), I would contact him and ask him when he wanted to reschedule the test. Sometimes people just forget about things, and if I knew that I still needed to take a test, I would try to work with the supervisor (or professor, or whoever) to get it rescheduled.

Since he was the person to cancel the test, imo, it would be his responsibility to reschedule it, not yours.

This is how my work, works. If my boss cancels and we dont hear from her, it is our duty to say something to her. (as per her rules)

The 'cancelee' is the one responsible - HE did the original cancelation!!
Unless you were advised otherwise - it's his fault!!

Even if it WAS his responsibility to reschedule, YOU should have taken the initiative and ASKED for him to please reschedule it -- ESPECIALLY if it was something on which you were going to be graded.

That's how I would have handled it...

I would've asked too. Even though he canceled the test you still have the responsibility to reschedule.

Completely agree.

Who scheduled the test in the first place? I think that would make a difference as well. Did you have to originally schedule it. Like did they say "let me know what you can take this" or did they like, " on this morning we'll need you to take this test"

I would probably have given him some time and asked, but I'd also point out that you don't deserve to be failed on something you never got the opportunity to complete.

That's what I'm thinking.

While you probably should have brought up the need to reschedule because your boss didn't, the boss also should have come to you about rescheduling before marking it down as a failure.

Sounds like a communication failure on both sides.

I think what I'd do now is to work with the boss to remedy the situation - ie, take that test as soon as possible and get it into your personnel file.

that stinks laurie. i agree with the majority, while he did cancel and technically he should have rescheduled.......you probably should have followed up. my beef would be that he failed you. that is unfair. i do hope you have the opportunity to retake the test.

my only other advice that i have learned over the years, is to document everything and in my opinion the best way to do that is with email. that way you retain a copy and can easily print and show your boss or anyone in HR.

When it coes to work remember to always CYA. Especially in this economy you never want to give them any excuse.

When he told me he needed me to do it another time, I would have come back to him at that moment and said "ok when do you want me to retake it?" And If he didnt get back to me in 2-3 business days I would have sent an email requesting a new test date so it is time and date stamped. Then when I get told shame on you for not taking it, I would print out the email and give it to them showing that I tried to make the effort. I would also follow up every week or so until I had some kind of scheduled appointment.

For my current job I have to be "front desk certified" I already know what I have to do but in order to keep my job I have to have the "coursework" completed by a certain time frame. We have been SO busy I have not had the opportunity to log on and do the work. I offered to take it online at my house and they told me dont worry about it. I have every couple days made it a point to offer to do the course work at home so they can not say that I dont have a job anymore because I didnt finish the course work.

I work in a constantly moving, busy environment. If my manager doesn't allot me time to take tests, training, etc it won't get done.
That really sucks that he failed you on the test, I think this would fall under "stuff happens and you forget" on both your parts, but he really should have rescheduled the minute the first one was cancelled so as not to forget.
