The price a person pays for an animal has nothing to do with them being willing to care for it or keep it forever. If that were the case, you wouldn't find purebred dogs in the shelters. I have known of people that have paid $5,000 for a dog plus importing fees for bragging rights and kept the dogs in deplorable conditions.

Or other people who get their animals for free and take give them the same quality care that they do the animals that they paid several thousand for. I paid several thousand for my old lipizzan cross,, $600 for my national champion grandson miniature horse and my lipizzan mare who has rare bloodlines and genes I got for free. They all get the same high quality food and love.

So short of an ad on Craigslist, what suggestions can you give me as to where to advertise this little guy? So sad that he can be so mean as he would have produced some very beautiful babies. :(

I think area plays a big part. I would be laughed at if I told someone $200 for an adult pet chin. They would get a cute baby from the petstore for $125, or one of the run of the mill breeders who are asking $75.

I never said "125" was a "fortune" for a chin. However, for a pet, I do think $500 is a lot, and I personally can't see charging a pet person that price when I know they won't make a dime of their money back.

To each their own I suppose!

Don't let craigslist fool you...I have found plenty of great homes from my craigslist/hoobly ads. You just have to screen your buyers :)

I'd make a post for here to sell him. There aren't all bad people on craigslist but i'd be hesitant to post on there selling an animal. You could try both though.

I agree that it depends on the area and the circumstances both. Personally I just re-homed a pet quality grey chinchilla to someone whom I am acquainted with for only $50 with a cage. I also just spent $350 on a georgeous 1st place pedigreed violet that I am super excited about. I looked on CL and there are tons of people on there trying to get $100 plus for pet quality chins and you keep seeing the same ads over and over. Space is limited for me so I'd rather use the space for higher quality animals. It also depends on what your goal is with them. Me personally I want to breed and show high quality animals. So you have to weigh what is important to you as an individual. I just cannot afford space wise to house an animal that will always just be a pet. So he is in a place now where he is an only chin who was a present for a girl I know who is recovering from a heart attack. I felt that was more important than getting more than fifty bucks for him. I only even charged the fifty bucks to re-coup what I paid for the cage so basically I just gave her the chin for free. Basically what I am getting at is it is a case by case basis.

If this male is the one I'm thinking of, you bought him from someone who bought him from the person I sold him to as a kit. Thats alot of owners in just a couple of years. So he has been bounced around alot and he may be stressed out from the lack of stability in his life. But in any case, I would think that in this area, you would be able to ask $100 to $150 for him depending upon how quickly you are looking to sell him, his current quality and his personality. Meaning if he is a sweetheart alone, and just a butt with other chins, he would still make a nice pet for someone. If you list him on Craigslist, just screen the people. Ask alot of questions about their experience with Chinchillas. And make sure they have done their research on their care. Hopefully you will find someone who can give him a forever home.

I agree. I purchased my chins off Craigslist/Hoobly, and now they are spoiled rotten. The breeder I got them from is so impressed with their care, that she offered me one of her favorite chins for free!
