i am new here... i became a member because of the follling...
i had some friends over and i was going in to check on the chins. my friend said "do u have baby chinchillas??" i of corse said no! i thought they were playing a mean joke on me! but they were't... my beige chinchilla (ruby) had 2 kits.... i feraked out and now they r in a carring cage with mom untill i can finish baby-proofing the cage :hair:!!!!!! i don't know quite what to do????

p.s. we have only had ruby 2 months and we know 4 sure that they r bo:thumbsup:th girls

We had our Chichi for barely a month and the same thing happened to us!! Don't panic! As long as you get them in a baby safe cage- momma should take care of the rest. The baby safe cage is very important. I couldn't believe it, but the kits got out of their cage the first day they were born. They are such mobile little things! But, I'm sure you know that by now! I made sure to baby proof it right away!!

I'm assuming Ruby was your only chinchilla? If you have a male in the cage, please seperate him from the mom and babies. This prevents breedback and also keeps the kits safe.

Be sure to read the FAQs on breeding and kits: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=864

It is very informative! Keep an eye out to make sure momma is feeding both kits. I really didn't have any trouble because Chichi knew exactly what to do. Make sure to post if you have any questions- there are sooo many knowledgeable people here!

Congrats on your little ones!!! :D Post pics when you can!

If you have had her only 2 months, she was pregnant when you brought her home. Like others have mentioned, check out the breeding and babies facts and be quick about kit proofing a cage for them. Momma chin should know what to do, but it is best to be prepared.

Just to be safe, you might want to post a picture of your other chinchilla's genitals so we can tell you for sure if she is indeed a she.

If you have any questions after you read the FAQs, feel free to ask. We will happy to help you out.

The same thing happened to me too! I also have a beige named Ruby and 3 weeks after I got her, she had two female kits and I scrambled to baby proof the cage! Sounds like deja vu!

First off, congrats! Second off, do you have a digital gram scale to weigh the kits? You should weigh them around the same time every day to make sure that they're gaining weight and gently feel their bellies; they should be warm and round. Also, remove any ledges and chin wheel you have in the cage as they are dangerous for the babies. Basically, the rest is all up to Ruby. She should take care of the babies for ya :))

Oh lastly, we need PICTURES!!!! :D

i have anothe chinchilla but when we took her to the vet a while back they confirmed she was a she! i alrready baby-proofed a cage with no ledges and no wheels... we have a standard grey and a beige. not sure on the sex yet but i think they are males... need get a scale though!!

o.k. as most of u know i woke up to 2 kits that werent expected. I forgot to mention that it is a breed bac. i need any info. that will help mom or babies... they r in a baby proff- cage. i also in specific need to know where to get a gram scale??? anything will be helpful and i am trying to get pics!!

couple more questions......
First the other female chin (Coya) just got dx with ring worm...the vet thinks she got it from Ruby (the new momma) because even though she does not have an actual ring worm her feet are crusty. So they both got their first dose of meds yesterday. The vet said to stop Rubys meds and to seperate Coya from Ruby and the babies.............any ideas on how long before Coya is not contagious to the babies anymore?
When do the babies need a dust bath? When should Ruby get one again?
Someone mentioned a gram scale......where do I look for one??
TIA!

You can find a gram scale at Walmart or Target. Any place that carries kitchen supplies. Also get digital not a spring scale.

I got my scale for my chinnies at walmart in the kicthen supplies. They aren't expensive at all :)

I've merged your threads as they were both dealing with the same topic, and I also changed the title. "omg" doesn't really give people an idea of what the thread is about, so this way you will likely get more advice.

The best advice I can give you is to read the FAQ on babies and then read through the entire breeding and babies section. The question of when to dust bathe is in there, when the kits can bathe, etc.

How is this a breedback? Are you a breeder? If not, how do you know it's a breedback?

when we got her she had just weened a litter... the male was supposedly removed BEFORE the kits were born but i think not. this is her 3rd litter and she is only 3. Ruby is done having babies. w thought she was done when we got her but apparentaly not!!
