I rescued 2 chinchillas today....I went to see a couple chins that were dropped off in a cardboard box at a vets office. It was a family of them, mom, dad and 2 babies. They have been at the vets over a month. It was so sad. They had them separeted in pairs- mom & daughter and father & son. I only wanted one as a friend for Delilah but when I saw them I could not seperate them so I took both mom and daughter!! They are so cute but their fur is in terrible shape. The vet did not have a dust bath for them so they have not baths in over a month and probably longer because I am sure whoever dumped them in a box at the vets did not take very good care of them!
They are surprisingly not too skittish for all they have been through. I am just happy to have them and hopefully all 3 can be friends! If not it is ok, it feels good to rescue an animal in need.
They are in quarantine right now but after that I will split the FN142 up and give them the top bunk.

Now I need names...suggestions?

Aw...how sweet of you. :) I can't wait to see them enjoying the good life!
Were they separated when they were dropped off? If they were "ALL" dropped off in a single cardboard box, then wouldn't Mommy most likely be pregnant again?

She may be, they don't know. But they said if she was they would take the kits back if I could not find them homes. I really could not leave her and just take her daughter. If she is pregnant I will cross that bridge when the time comes.

names: mom - thunder Baby - lightning thats what they looked like to me or tina and trina
irene and ingrid or dalia and delsie or just mix and match these names or choose different but either way there adorable

How are they doing? Are they eating and pooping ok? Poor things. :(

They were eating a crappy Petsmart Chin food mix at the vets so I was worried about switching them to the Mazuri that I feed but they started eating it right away. They had a water bowl, not a bottle at the vets so I set them up with both for now. I am afraid of them not drinking from the water bottle. It looks like they may have drank a little from the water bottle.

They are doing pretty good considering. They are not too jumpy and will let me pet them a little. But I have tried to leave them alone most of the day to rest and settle in.

Their fur is really rough, should I give them a daily dust bath? Delilah takes one 3-4 a week but she has very nice fur.

They are super cute, I think they will settle in fine.

It was probably stupid of me to take a possibly pregnant female but I could not leave her there, she needed me as much as her little girl did.

It may take them a while to start drinking water just from all the stress. I know my rescue took forever to start eating and drinking normally but now she's a fatty! lol. I would recommend giving them a dust bath once a day for right now. Do they have any stains on their fur? Adding some cornstarch to the dust bath definitely helps get rid of that! My rescue chin had really terrible fur when I got her and was all stained on the bottom. I gave her dust baths everyday for about 1 and 1/2 weeks and now her fur is perfect :)

Well I have seen them both drinking from the water bottle so I removed the water dish.
They sure do love their dust baths now! Can't wait until mommas fur is better, the babies is not so bad.
They do seem to have pee stains on them around the genital area.

I can't wait to see what they look like after some TLC from you. I bet they'll be even more beautiful very soon! Would love to see more pics in the future of their transformation!

Congrats on your new family!!

I just wanted to warn you be very careful when doing an intro, Mama may see Delilah as a threat to her baby, and try to hurt her. Sounds like you have a good handle on how you're going to keep them regardless of how the intro's work out, I'd just hate to see anyone get hurt. Honestly if they were my chins I wouldn't try for an intro, I'd just keep Mama&Baby together and my other chin separate.

You can give them dust baths daily, show chins get dusted daily for several weeks leading up to a show.

Incase Mom is pregnant just be prepared. Have a baby safe cage ready. Call the vet and ask him when Mom and Dad were separated. Count 111 days after that, and it will give you a ball park for when babies could arrive. If the vet wasn't dusting them for over a month I'd be concernend that he isn't too knowledgeable on chins. I'd be looking for a chin savvy vet incase Mama is pregnant and needs assistance.

Thank you Brittany! You are right, I gues I should keep them separate. Would you try any playtime together? My initial goal for another chin was to have a playmate for Delilah. I was only going to take the baby but when I saw mom I melted, she has such a sweet face.

I suppose Delilah is good with just me, lol

Thanks for all the info!

Also the vet admitted thy knew nothing about Chinchillas so I know not to ask them anything

You may try when baby is much older and mom isn't as protective of her, but I would wait a long time before I made any attempts. You'll just have to see how it goes. Delilah will be fine with out a friend if it doesn't work out. My chins are all single and they do just fine.
