So my chinnie was acting a bit more aggressive towards my dog today. Usually the run up to the cage and great each other with sniffs. But today she came darting out of her house squeaking and trying to rip his nose off. Then quicky ran back into her hidey house.

Well I took a peak in her hidey house, and sure enough, there was a tiny fluff of a tail sticking out from under her! I had a hunch they she may be pregnant. I got her off craigslist a few months ago. She was being kept in a cage with a male and being bred back to back to back to back. Poor thing.

But now mama and baby are safe and happy. She appears to be feeding and snuggling with baby. Shes had so many litters its probably just natural for her by now.

No, I've never had kits before. I'm not a breeder. Just wanted to get the poor girl out of a bad situation, so I was willing to take on the chance of her being pregnant. But I've been reading up in the breeding section the past month or so. And yes, the cage is baby safe. :)

Only thing I'm having a tiny problem with is sexing the little one. Mommas feeding right now, so when shes done I'll get some shots of him/her and maybe someone can help me.

Yeah, I checked that and I'm 'guessing' its a little boy? But a few others' opinions would be more than appreciated!

Not the best picture. Little one wouldn't stay still and I'm still a little nervous about holding him.

Bella is a standard and she was kept with a darker male. Either an ebony or black velvet, I'm not too sure. My guess is that baby is a gorgeous standard! :)

Congrats, glad she only had the one! You really need to make sure you have a baby safe cage--kits can squeeze through some very small holes--holes you wouldn't think they could get through.

Make sure there is a house or place the kit can go to get away from mom if necessary--also no shelves or ledges so that mom doesn't accidentally jump down and crush baby. No wheels in the cage while the kit is growing, no dust baths for mom for a few days.

Glad you read up to be prepared, but don't be afraid to ask if there is something you're unsure of.

I have no idea about the color but I'm glad everything went well with the momma and the kit is simply adorable. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm guessing a boy as well, but I'm not 100%?

After he is weaned is it possible to cage him with a male who is not his father? Since he obviously cant live with mama if he is in fact male. I have 2 other male chins in a divided FN and the little one would have to be paired with one. Is this even possible? Should I begin the intoductions in a few weeks?

Yes you can house the male kit with another male once the kit is grown and weaned. You'll have to follow normal intro procedures. Cagemates are often not related so this is definitely something you can try.

Okay! In a few days after baby is settled in a bit, I'll post a few more pictures just to 100% verify its a male.

Another thing I was concerned about, was dust baths? It says after 2 weeks I can give mama and baby a dust bath together? Wont she smush the kit while shes twisting and turning about? Or does she know to be careful?

I was worried about that too, but the kit will get out of the way. Maybe put the dust in a larger bowl/pan than usual, so you're not as worried? But mine are using their (small) dust house together just fine. I had surprise kits too and now the little one is a month old! Congrats on the baby they're stressful but worth it.

That baby looks tov to me - if the belly is white then it's a black if it stays grey it's a tov ebony. Congrats on a safe delivery!

Most breeders dust on their normal routine babies or not - the babies will get out of the way - she won't smush them. Most of my babies are scared of it the first few times and then by week 4-5 they start getting interested in the dust bath.
