About 3 weeks ago I got 2 chinchillas, the female is aged around 18 months and the male 5 years. They had previously been kept together as a breeding pair but their owner had given them up to be rehomed.

The place I got them from had been keeping the two of them separate as they were unsure if she was pregnant or not when she came in. Once we got them home we got them a royal suite 95 I think its called and kept the ramp locked up so that it is currently two cages.

Last night we found one baby had been born. Having a quick look it appears to be a boy. Currently we have the royal suite cage and another one tier cage with a couple of shelves we bought to keep one of them in until their suite arrived.

We are planning on keeping the baby in with mum for at least 8 weeks but were unsure of the best way to keep them after this? The dad has not yet been neutered so we'll be havng that done soon..I presume we should get the baby neutered ASAP aswell?

I'd really appreciate any advice you have as to cage arrangements for the future..it seems unfair to let two live together and keep one on its own.

Thank you

The safest choice would be to just let the dad and son be together and avoid surgery. Even if you get them castrated, you should not risk putting them all together in one big cage. The males may very well still fight over the female.

Also want to mention that many times animals will need to be handfed after a surgery. Peggy has offered great advice. Just keep the boys together and keep mom in a different cage after weaning. She will be fine.
