Actually looking at that websites treat section, most of the treats are not appropriate for chinchillas, being a rescue you would think basic chinchilla nutrition would be known. If people don't believe sugar will mess up the gut then hopefully they know enough to know sugar effects teeth, chinchillas get cavities and periodontal disease just like humans and its worse since they do not brush their teeth.

Is it ok to feed fresh wheat grass as a treat then? I was wondering if you needed to dry it out before giving it to them or anything?

Ok, thanks Dawn.

I have a baggy full of the pellets---is there any little animal that can eat them? I have pet rats, for example.....

I'd give them to the rats. They can have fruit and sugar in moderation. It's funny because Persephone and Chalupa came with a bunch of snacks that were just appallingly bad for them (banana and nut "chinchilla" granola bars, seriously, WTF?) and I just use them for my rat treats now. Of course, the same rules apply for rats with treats, in moderation, but those sort of no no snacks for chinchillas are fine for rats.

My rats also get whatever plastic tubes I can salvage from the chinchilla's cages when I'm remodeling them. They love hand me downs!

Ooh thanks for the info! I'm glad the pellets can go to good use. And my ratties love hand-me-downs as well. I've got a hammock in their cage my chins never used, and I put the ramps from my Ferret Nation in there as well (attached with binder clips). They LOVE em.

There were sticks made that were rolled in oat meal paste and then rolled in crushed rose hips. The paste was just ground oats with water added to a paste, then applied to the stick, then rolled in hips and baked in a low over, there may have been more to the recipe but that is the gist of it.
