Tonight when I went into the bathroom, aka Kenji's room, I noticed he was holed up in his hut and didn't look like he had moved. I immediately took him out of the cage and was relieved that he wasn't hibernating. However I did notice that his light pink blanket was crawling with itty bitty black and red "bugs" ... I immediately removed the cage, blanket and hut to outside of the house and then focused on Kenji. I gave him an oatmeal bath and dried him off throughly upon close inspection it didn't seem as though he had any "bugs" on him. I proceeded to take him upstairs and into bed with me. It is now 4-1/2 hours later, I haven't slept a wink and he is in a temporary cage until I figure out what the hell is going on.
My boyfriend and his sister (she's the animal lover in the family) are at work right now, but they left some dog shampoo that is for fleas and ticks. It's a green shampoo made by Zodiac and contains a coconut conditioner. I'm thinking if I can see the bugs, which are black or red and not white, that it might be fleas and something else. So I'm wondering if using this shampoo on him, then using the oatmeal bath again on him, would that be okay?
I am willing to go to the vet for my little guy, I just don't know if I'm jumping the gun until I ran by everyone here.
I'm exhausted, worried and feeling like the worse hedgie mom ever right now. Even though Kenji doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, other than being pissed when I disturb him to check for bugs, I don't want him to get sick or die because I didn't do the right thing quickly enough.
I also brought him upstairs about 20 minutes ago to check him under the high powered magnifying lense and I definately saw a black "bug" on him. I've had cats and dogs in the past and am thinking that it's fleas. There are dogs in the house, but they get treated regularly with flea stuff AND they don't go into the bathroom.
Okay that's all for now, I"m going to take a boiling hot shower because I feel like they are crawling all over me now. I am open to all suggestions, but please please don't bash me for my baby getting these bugs, I'm already at wits end and I've been up for 24 hours now and I don't do well when my insomnia kicks in.
