For those who have been breeding for a while (mainly because they have more data off of which to work), have you noticed either gender to be more common than the other in your kits? Are male kits more common than females or vice versa?

50/50

You may have spurts of more male than females or vice versa but generally it evens out. Some years you may have more males, other years more females but over a career I would say it is faily even.

The first year I bred I had 7 of each.
The second year I bred I had 14 of each.
The 3rd year I bred I had 61 females and 52 males.
As of April this year I had 18 females and 23 males.

Maleapalooza is happening at my house right now...so sometimes it can feel like it but as others have said it eventually evens out... Message to my herd...time for the girls now...lol ;)

Here are my stats m:f

2013 so far-10:7
2012- 18:15
2011- 18:10
2010- 12:15
2009- 11:9
2008- 16:12
2007- 9:19

And that's as far back as it's easy for me to get records. That's a final ration of 94:87 so yeah, fairly even at the end of the day but sadly...my best girl year was forever ago.

Environment can play a big part to this ratio. Keep them in the dark or with only incandescent lighting with no exposure to full spectrum lighting and you will end up very male heavy. I have known some people to run as high as 95% males. 50/50 is about the best average you can hope for but most run about 60/40 with the males running higher.

I use many daylight tube bulbs and keep them on all day until I feed in the early evening. My vision is not what it used to be, so I like it bright. So far this year I have had 31 males and 32 females.

Hum, interesting Randy, come to think of it, this year I have more males and yes, my lighting has not been what I had given them in the past where I was very close to 50/50.

We use full spectrum lighting in our room. Right now we stand at 12 females and 10 males born. We had mostly males in the winter/spring and mostly females that last 2 months.

We use full spectrum lighting for 12 hours a day, or shall I say night! Lights are on from 8pm to 8 am here every night to cut down on heat generated during the heat of the day. It makes keeping the barn cool a lot easier and less costly!

Good point Randy! Hmmm...I don't have a barn (yet) but this premise would hold just as true for a basement and I know that electricity is cheaper at night as well as the air costs to consider!

The other factor is that I have a 42" exhaust fan that in the summer I run on any nights it is 70 degrees or less out pulling in cool fresh air all night when the lights are on making heat. The barn stays nice and cool all night and a lot of mornings the barn is cool enough to not even have to run the AC or to only have to run it part of the day.
