make your own chin spin or flying saucer

Since I have been home over the summer, my mom and I have gotten into a bit of trouble with the chins . She loves her "grandchildren" and comes up with ideas for us to make for their cage, we even have a FN jar we drop money into to upgrade the boys soon, 50 bucks away!.

We were in the pool and my mom reminded me that the shelves my grandfather made come in Saturday for Bryson's cage. Then that topic led into "well we have to run to Home Depot for some supplies, so why don't we grab some pine and make the boys some fun things" Then I thought, is there a way to make your own chin spin or flying saucer? :hmm: Is it possible? If so, how? I love making things for my boys. Even a simple piece of fleece tied in a knot is amazingly fun to them.... They are crazy boys.

Hmm, so I guess I'm just thinking out loud for the moment, just wanting to know if it can even be done. I've seen pictures and I don't think it would be that difficult, just want to know what others have to think about it.

I'm not even sure how you would make your own flying saucer without metal working supplies. First you'd have to fabricate your own bar for it to sit on and then get the dish. I dunno, seems like a lot of work and it'd be cheaper to buy one.

A regular chin wheel is easier to make on your own. They're the type that you can see on Carise's website but are not quiet by any means. They're just a large metal feeding pan which you can normally find at farm supply stores and then a lazy susan spinning part. Then you just drill holes to put the bolts and things on.

Would be a lot easier to make a chin spin...A FS not so easy! My Dad who makes everything says it would be easy but...we've never got around to trying it, we have got the supplies and tools ready though!

I found a way to convert my silent spinner into a FS, but it lasted and worked wonderfully for about 2 weeks then came off the prongs, which would involve super gluing them into the sockets, which would mean I wouldn't be able to get it out. I'm going to make my own chinspin.

It's a feed pan you can get at all feed stores and a lazy susan bearing.

I have a bearing I found at the good will I'd like to use, but haven't found a pan big enough. What size pan is this? The ones I've seen at the feed stores are only about 10" in diameter and maybe 3" deep.

Chinchichi a wok might work, you'd have to remove the handle though. Have to go look at the asian markets. I know I've seen some metal wash bowls at the asian markets that might work too.

Jinul thanks for the instructions. We don't have a tractor supply in Vegas . There are a couple of other feed stores I have yet to check.

I saw a pic of a home made wheel on the hedgie forum that looked like it was made from a bucket and pvc pipes. I was thinking if you could find a galvanized bucket that was big enough it could be cut down and sanded, but I've yet to find one.

I haven't made one of these wheels, so I have no idea about the machine screws. I do know that the lazy susan bearing can be bought at any home depot or lowes.

I am making one too. I have already bought a lazy susan bearing. And I am planning on getting that feed pan this weekend because there is a TSC near my cottage.

I'm planning on attempting on as well. Just got to wait until I get paid to go get the stuff. Then wait till daddy has time away from repairing the damages to the rental property to assist me.
