I'm a bit new here but does anyone else have any good advice for major surgical recovery?

My chinchilla Piper had a pretty bad case of pyometra, had an emergency spay, and is in a recovery cage while her incision heals. When she goes back to her usual cage, is there anything I should think of removing until she's fully recovered?

Measure out her food and water to keep track how much she is eating, drinking and pooping. Let us know if she is not eatibg much and may need handfeeding. She should be fine, but act quickly if you notice anything off.

More often than not you will need to handfeed chinchillas after surgery. Critical Care from Oxbow is a good handfeeding formula or Essentials of Life from Fuzzy Kingdom is another one. Did the vet send you home with pain medication for her?

When they have had surgery, the smaller the amount of space they have to move around in, the less likely they are to pull something or hurt themselves. Also, no shelves or things she might try to jump up onto.

I think fleece is easiest to keep clean and watch for any blood or discharge.

Good luck with your baby...

We were sent home with pain meds, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics. She got hand fed a combination of herbivore Emeraid and her normal pellets softened and mixed with water for about a week and whatever treats we could tempt her with. She's now eating and drinking on her own and behaving much more like her usual bossy self.

She gets her staples pulled later this week and it looks like she's starting to go a bit stir crazy from not having a dust bath and the confined quarters.
