Loverly Earring

So, I just got a new chinchilla. I got her from an owner, not a breeder or a ranch.
She has this metal tag/earring/clip/thingy on her ear. It doesn't have numbers on it, or anything. It's completely blank. It almost looks like that metal clip they put on socks to keep them together.

What does it mean? Is it for a specific ranch? Does it help to easily identify females from males?

Just curious.

Normally they have some kind of letters and/or numbers on them. I don't know anyone that uses them without info on them. Can you get a picture to make sure it's an ear tag and not an "earring" people can do strange things.

Did you check both sides of the tag??

I did check both sides, and they're both blank. I'll get a picture of it up as soon as I can.
I contacted the owner, and she said the chinchilla used to be shown at York, but she didn't now if it won anything.
But I'm still curious to know about the tag, and what it's purpose is if it doesn't have anything on it.
