Okay first off I am not breeding right now. I want to get into it, and want to do it the right way. I have one chin who is my pet. I am looking into getting another as a pet only though. I want to do this right so I was wondering if there are any good breeders in Upstate NY (I'm in Broome County). I know for sure I need a mentor. I've tried visiting some local breeders but none of them seem to really care. For instance one breeder I visited sent chins to homes the day they were weaned! I want to meet up with a quality breeder and see how they do things, learn for myself.

I also am planning on going to the PA show, where I MIGHT get my first breeding pair, I'd like to meet up with someone who knows how to choose which chins would complement each other. I want to breed for quality and to improve by getting the best I can afford, I refuse to be a backyard ignorant breeder. So please can someone help me? Are there some good quality breeders near me?

P.S. I've seen how new people can be bashed...please don't be too terse if you don't believe I should be breeding. I know all of you are very knowledgeable and just want to be able to learn.

I doubt you'll get bashed, since you already said one of the best things - you'll go to the PA show, watch the show, learn, and "maybe" get your first breeding pair. That's generally what everybody asks a new person to do, they just seem to be pretty resistent to the idea.

I would suggest you read through the breeding and babies section thoroughly. Look through some of the horror stories, not to be off putting, but so you know exactly what you can be facing. Read through some of the emergency pregnancy threads as well, again, so you can attempt to be prepared.

As far as breeders in upstate New York, I'm not real sure who is up there anymore, but I'm sure someone will come along that can tell you.

Welcome to CnH. :)

Welcome.

Many times at shows, the judge(s) are more than happy to take some time after the show and take a look at chins you're considering buying and go over their strengths/weaknesses.

Okay will defidently do tunes! And thanks Luaralynne, I'll definitely ask the judges!:)

Think about what you are going to do with the offspring, the chin selling business is non-existent especially for someone who is new and has no reputation and rescues are full to capacity. This economy is not going to improve any time soon so you would be better off learning to take care pets and study on breeding and going to shows and learn rather than making more chins that we frankly do not need, that is not bashing its the truth.

Depends where in upstate you are, Jessica of Godin's Chinchillas is an excellent breeder, she is around Albany? I believe? And Paul (PJK) is near Buffalo. And there's Dee of Humble Acres (chinsndobermans), she is also Western NY I think.

The York show is just about four months away, it's my favorite show after Nationals. =) There's a show in NY in September as well.

Thats a pretty good question. What did everyone here do? How did you all find good homes for your kits when you were just getting started.

My idea was to enter the offspring in shows and see if anyone there wants to buy them. Also make a website and maybe put adds in the local paper (For that I'd require people to fill out an application and interview.) I know for sure though I refuse to EVER use Craigslist.

I feel like we just had similar threads asking the same thing, also from a girl in Broome County, NY (city of Binghamton) who wanted to go to the PA show. Deja vu?

Read through the Breeding FAQ, visit reputable ranchers/breeders, go to shows, learn to judge quality, make sure you have baby-proof cages, buy the best quality chins you possibly can, start out slow, make sure you have a good steady job to care for the chins and money set aside for vet emergencies.

I agree start out by going to a show... see quality, talk to the bigger breeders, They have excellent advice.

Not everyone gets bashed those threads are just more noticable. Many of the people getting "bashed" have a history here of not providing basic care...letting chinchillas die due to lack of basic medical attention and of other things. If you want to learn we want to teach.

Another great thing to do is find a mentor within driving distance. A reputable breeder you can spend some time with

Thats what I was planning to do. And I've been looking at some old threads and noticed that.

Right now the main thing I'm doing is looking for a mentor, thats one reason I started this threat. I sent a PM to Megan and Godin, I noticed they're not more than three hours from me.

Ah, my bad, I should have checked this earlier. Your location and information was a little too familiar. Takura - Don't piss me off by trying to have multiple accounts. You screwed up, you got called on it, you've got a crappy rep now. Don't try and come on here with a new name and make like it's all better. We have rules here. Why don't you try reading them, since you were supposed to have done so already. You are NOT allowed to have multiple accounts.

I mean really, any chance you had for being taken seriously just got flushed down the toilet. We don't tolerate liars here and we don't tolerate people who can't admit they are dead wrong, so instead try and pull the wool over our eyes by signing up under a new user name and pretend like you're going to do things the right way. You've already made it quite clear that you're not.

This account will be deleted. You will post under Takuraktty, or you will not post at all.

Wow I sure know you just lost any shot of redeeming yourself with me..... One of the only things I cannot seem to forgive is liers..
