So this weekend the strangest thing happened. On Friday both of my Chinchillas were fine. I had them out in their play pen, they were playing around. They were both fine. On Saturday Chilli, one of my two chilnchillas (they're only about two years old) seemed to be not feeling so well. I wanted to take her to a vet because it was abnormal but my mom thought she was constipated so we gave her some more hay to try to make her feel better.

Yesterday things got worse. She was suddenly thinner, she wouldn't move, she was laying down on her side and it looked like she was having trouble breathing. Down in her genital area it looked like she was pooping out her insides, at least that's what my mom's boyfriend said. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen in my life. I begged my mom to take bring her to the vet, but she said no, she told me it would pass. So I called the vet and made an appointment for this morning. But this morning she had passed away.

Do you have any idea what could have been wrong with her? Out of all the chinchillas I've owned in my life I've never seen anything like it. I separated my other Chinchilla, Molly, from her yesterday when she was looking really bad. I kept her near by and Molly watched her like all night. But do you think Molly may have been able to catch whatever Chilli had? She seems fine and I keep checking her. How would I disinfect the cages? I really don't want to lose her too. And is she going to be alright being alone now? They're from the same batch of little chins and they've never been apart.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Your chin WAS "pooping out her insides." It's called a prolapse. It could have been rectal or vaginal, I don't know, I didn't see it.

I don't mean to be rude, and I realize this is your first post in the community, but we have seen far too many of these posts lately. If your mom is not willing to provide vet care for your remaining chin if it should become necessary, PLEASE, rehome it. What your girl died from is a hideously painful death. Picture walking around with your intestines dragging behind you, hanging out of your rectum. She should have been taken to the vet and humanely euthanized.

Disinfecting the cages is not a bad thing to do with any illness in a chin, but I would get your other chin checked by a vet to be sure she is okay. Have a stool sample checked. Make sure your feed is good, your hay is good, and your water supply is safe. Also be sure she cannot get into anything during playtime.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

Since constipation was suspected, a intestinal prolapse is what you saw. Your chin was in extreme pain prior to death and your Mother is responsible for your chins suffering until death . Vet care is not a option, its a animals right. List what you feed as far as hay, pellets and treats by brand, how much water is consumed, what bedding you use so we can see if that was the cause of the constipation.
