Can I use sand for litter?

And can I use any type of fabric to put in his cage to keep him warm and use as carpet instead of shavings?

I would not use sand, it's too dusty. You can use fleece as bedding/blanket material. Double it up and sew it, fold it over, or buy liners from vendors here.

Fleece - either sewn like Dragonflye suggests or a single layer cut to the right size - works wonderfully.

For litter, I've tried a lot: aspen bedding, Yesterday's News, Carefresh, and a paper towel. Ultimately, I found a paper towel to work best. Less messy for me to deal with; less dusty for hedgie to breathe in.
