In PA? It is illegal to own any cat besides a housecat, any dog besides a domesticated dog, bears, skunks, gray-headed parakeets, nutria, raccoons, primates, and wild game.
58 PA. Code §137.1

there is lots of adds for snakes like relaters and other exotics on line. what about hedgehogs and surger gliders? i was told you can have a hedgehog you just cant sale or breed them?

I know in NY its veryyyyy limited on exotics. I think only like chins, hedges and maybe a couple of others is okay. I think in the city they're not allowed at all.

I remember I was so upset when I found out they were strict on exotics. I wanted to get a pet fox shipped from Russia......if only I had about 8 grand lololol

Sugar gliders, degus and hedgies are all illegal in PA. With hedgies it's a catch22...you can purchase one froma PA breeder that already exists. BUT it's illegal to breed/sell in PA :) but there are so many ins and outs and a LOT is open to individual (on the part of the regulating agencies) interpretation. So you can call one agency today and get approval for any of the above...if a member of a different (or even the same) finds out tomorrow you have a glider for example and they disagree the animal can be seized and euthed. Likewise, I THINK illegal pets are not covered by vets so vet care will be hard if not impossible to find and they could report you.

Just not worth it unless you've heard from every regulating agency that it IS legal and get paperwork to prove as much should you be taken to court.

Skunks, coon, and fox ARE legal to own (as they're native species here) BUT you MUST have the proper permits. Know a guy in the town I used to live...owned a mountain lion. Eventually sold it because the permit fees were outrageous and he could no longer afford them.

To be honest, irresponsible owners are largely the cause for most animals being classed illegal. Especially the exotics. They either accidentally or intentionally make it outside of the home and into the wild. They can replace other species in the natural ecosystem, or compete with them...OR decimate them due to disease that the domestic variety carriers that the wild populations cannot combat.

bubbles in altoona last time i was there she had one thats was last year.. i also got snaped at cuz she has a farret cage next to the chins cage... i dont know how to shut up when it comes to animals

LOL! Figured it was Bubbles...I also mentioned the ferret RIGHT NEXT to the chinchilla...was told that they're domestic and non-reactive to one another. The chin, at that time, was a brown velvet.

Just the same, as a lover of exotics...especially the smaller furrier variety (rather than scaled or feathered) I've looked into these matters extensively in the past. Could my info be out of date? Absolutely! Do I think that it is...doubtful. These laws are in place for good reasons a lot of the time...and are therefore, infrequently changed.

i dont remeber what the chin looked like i just remember getting mad.... i might stop there tomrow to see if they moved them yet..
