Im about to place an order for lots of lava items (swings, ledges, landings, bites, dots) but i have a quick question, do your chins like the lava swings? And also my chinchilla will destroy a lava bite in 1 night so im wondering if its worth getting lava ledges if they are only gonna last a couple of nights? Also where is the cheapest place to order all the lava stuff?

Thanks

Most of the lava stuff is kind of a waste, as your chins will just chew it up, and you'll want to replace it!
You can buy/make all that stuff of kiln-dried pine much cheaper, and it'll last about 5 times longer!
I keep at least one lava block in each cage. and they last from 1-3 months, depending on the chin. I change them when they're small enough to be tossed out of the cage, before they get stepped on, as that's usually painful!
I usually buy in bulk, as the shipping is a killer!

I have tried the lava ledges before and they last about a week maybe two week depending on the chin. Mine didn't care to sit on the swing only to chew it.

So basically only the lava bites and lava dots are worth it? thanks

I have only bought the lava ledges. My chins dont chew them so to me its worth it, lol!! But if you can get them cheaper online i would do that. The pet stores want like $8. for one.

Yeah the ledges and swings seem pointless if they only chew them, why not just get the bites or dots, and he buys in bulk from doctor foster and smith with the chew blocks

Drs. Foster and Smith - on the websight!
There'll be some powder in the box when you open it - I guess they get pretty bounced around from shipping!

I don't consider something a chin loves to chew a waste. My chins don't chew their shelves half as much as they chew their lava items. I specifically buy the ledges because they last so much longer. I usually buy one a month for each cage.

If you have a pet supermarket near you you can find them there for very reasonable.

Well i guess not a waste, just cheaper to buy lava dots or bites, my chinchilla would probably demolish a lava ledge in 2 days

Probably not. The bites are a waste of money. They disappear in a matter of minutes. The ledges at least last several weeks, if not a bit longer.

Oh, ok thanks, im just gonna get some of those large blox though

I love to watch my Stitch. He will sit on a lava ledge, and chew it from underneath him...I prefer him to do that than my other lad who barely nibbles his - I buy them to be destroyed - they do usually last 2-3 months.

i just got lava landings, they come 2 to a pack. my chins dont really sit on them kinda hop over them & nibble. even my boy with malo kinda nibbles & rubs his face on it.

I don't think they are a waste either. If a chin likes them enough to chew them, get them lol One of my girls never has a lava bite more than a hour...sometimes it doesn't last 30 minutes with her. then I've got one boy who a lava bite last him a week or more. So i dont think its a waste if they like chewing it till their gone in a short amount of time or every now and then.

I buy the 2 packs like Michelle posted. My 3 girls destroy the bites in about 5 minutes but so far the lava ledge has lasted 2 weeks. I have it set up so they use it as a ledge to get into their hammock but they do chew on it quite a bit. It seems to hold up pretty well though.

I meant the expense of the swings and ledges and other pieces compared to the price of the blocks! With a herd of + - 40, cost is a major consideration!
Some of mine take a 2" square block to a 3/4" ball in less than a week, and some don't even touch it!

My chin loves the lava bites (the loose triangles that come in a 3 pack) and will chew them up in minutes!

I bought the lava landings and dots, but she hasn't destroyed them at all. It's been a month and only the landing's edges have been rounded out just a tad. I've noticed that Sesame is sorta lazy and would prefer being able to hold the actual chewing item in her paws as opposed to it hanging or being bolted to the cage walls where she has to work for it. You could always get some to try it out. Another alternative is to just buy pumice stones. My chin loves them just as much and it's cheaper than the lava bites.
