I was wondering...Is Kaytee Timothy Hay alright to use all the time?

Monday night after giving the chins fresh hay i ran out of the hay that i ordered offline. So tuesday morning I went to walmart and grabbed 2 bags of Kaytee Timothy Hay.
usually after giving them chins fresh hay at night when they are active and playing around I find A LOT of it on the floor outside their cages the next morning. Well Wednesday morning I woke up with NO hay on the floor outside the cages. They had eaten it all.
Usually they knocked most of it out of the cage and still had some left in teh cage of a morning that had to be thrown out.
Wednesday morning I got up to NO hay on the floor and didn't have to thrown hay out.
they ate it all. They just seem to like it more, so even though its more expensive I thought if it was fine for them to have all the time then I'd just spend the extra money on it since they like it.

Kaytee hay is fine if you can find the decent quality bags. Kaytee is just looked down upon because most chins won't eat it. If your chins will, then it works out. :)

I've heard rumors that they dye the hay to make it more green. Not sure if that's completely healthy, but we eat a lot of dyed food too, so I'm not sure. I think it's another thing with freshness, since you don't know how long it's been in a warehouse.

I have noticed that Oxbow is also way more green that other hays. Kaytee and Oxbow are about the same color.

^where do you purchase it at? I got mine at walmart and its a little bag for almost $4

The dye makes me not want to give it to them at all.

And as far as decent quality bags...well its the little bags. not really sure how much is in it.

The dying is a rumor. None of us know if it is true or not. While I don't feed Kaytee to my chins, I will say that 99.9% of the rescues I take in are eating Kaytee hay, and continue to do so while with me (if it is given to me with the surrendered chin - I don't like to waste hay, especially if that is what they are used to), and I have never seen any ill effects from it.

I used to feed the Kaytee brand but my chin wouldn't touch it. She eats a lot more hay now that I switched to Oxbow.

I think if they eat it, use it. Oxbow is better but sometimes you get crappy bags, at least kaytee is consistent.

I use to use Kaytee but switched over to Oxbow. I noticed that their poos got larger after I switched.

I used to buy Kaytee Hay but it seemed like every other bag had crappy brown hay buried in the middle of the bag, half the time my chins would eat and half the time I think they would have a hay food fight in the middle of the night because I would find it everywhere but mostly outside of the cage, lol. I've switched to Oxbow and its been consistently good long green pieces of hay that my chins love.

I noticed the same thing!

I also noticed that my chins eat it up faster than the Kaytee hay. They seem to much prefer the Oxbow. I had a lot of trouble finding a fresh bag of Kaytee, and when the started selling Oxbow locally, I started buying that.

I wondered about Kaytee hay! My Petco doesn't sell Oxbow so I order it. I always wondered if I ran out if Kaytee would be ok. Kunya picks through his Oxbow and there is a lot outside of his hay basket....boy is he picky!! LOL :)
