Kaytee is blue sparkle now, years ago it used to be blue cloud.
Really? I didn't know that. I bought Kaytee dust in a pinch before and not only was it expensive, I found it rather grainy. I've just received my first order of Blue Cloud but I've been using the Sun Seed dust and honestly I quite liked it, more than the Kaytee that is.

Oh my gosh, that's horrible!
My fiance and I bought a bag of Kaytee once and it was full of COBWEBS! I'm not sure if that's kaytee's fault or the pet store's, but we returned it and switched food immediately.

Prolly from from moths, kaytee sent us a shipment with moths once and they build weird cobweb things, which resulted in our store having a moth problem :impatient:
it was extremely annoying and we had to throw out all the treats on the treat bar.
But aparently we cant kill them, cuz its not safe we had to spray them with stuff so that they lost the ability to reproduce. o.0 quite weird.

I must have gotten some bad Kaytee dust then, because there is no way that the Kaytee dust is even comparable to blue cloud or blue sparkle.

Kaytee is a bath sand not a dust. The particles don't even get under the fur. Every time I would use it, Pachuco would just hop out of his dust bath run around the room, and when I would go to put him back his fur would still be oily because all the dust fell off...

Kaytee is a great cheap brand if you really don't care about your chinchilla and want to pass with the bare minimum to keep them alive. Period. It's like feeding dog food to your grandmother. Yea it works, but do you really feel moral doing it?

Spend the extra money if you have to, look for feed stores in your area, and often times the cost of the higher quality foods and dust will actually be cheaper than what you are spending on Kaytee. Also if you can find a feed store that produces hay for horses, if you ask nicely you can probably secure access to some of the hay that falls off the bundles for free. The feed store I go has a sealed barn area with all the hay in it and they sweep all the extra stuff to a pile in the corner and let me have free pickings at it. Very cool.

So you are saying people who use Kaytee dust are providing the "bare minimum" and that using hay that has been swept up in dust and other crap that falls on a feed store's floor is just fine to feed?

And Kaytee is a dust, not a sand. Sand is what they use a lot overseas, it has a much different texture.

Around here, Kaytee brand IS more expensive than some of the other pet shop brands and definitely more expensive than the better brands that you can get at a feed store or online. I paid $11 for a container of Kaytee dust once and I can get Sun Seed for $7.95 and buying the Blue Cloud online is cheaper yet.

I used the Kaytee stuff when I first got my chins. I found out later that Blue Cloud was better so I started using it. There is a huge difference between the Blue cloud and what Kaytee sells around here. The Kaytee here looks like gray sand and doesn't work too well.

wow.
my chinchilla has been on kaytee since before i bought him, but this has completely changed my mind.
i plan to change his diet as soon as possible.
especially after seeing that mold ball.
