Do you think that could explain why some chins--after years together--get into fights with previously-amicable cagemates?
It could be one of the reasons, though some chinchillas are much more sensitive to change and even something like construction being done across the street can be the stresser that starts the fighting. Big changes are the key to starting fights among chins. That change could be a lot of things, such as a female having a kit, a male becoming sexually mature, a female going into heat, etc.
Then there are the very small amount of exceptions that just decide they don't really like that particular chinchilla so they won't ever get along with them.
