My first chin is freddie a ebony male and i have just got a ebony female there in the same cage and seem to be getting on ok is there any warning signs i should be looking for? Female is very vocal and nosiey when taking her out of cage where male is perfect all around....im hoping for babies!!

How old are they? Are they breeding quality? Have you done your research on chinchillas and pregnancy? There's a lot to take into consideration before putting two chins together. If you have done all that then best of luck to you!

You really should keep them in separate rooms for 30 days as a quarantine period, because if your girl is carrying something and you don't realize it, Freddie could get sick and none of us want that! Do you have two cages? Three reasons: A, The quarantine. B, sticking them in together like that can be really dangerous. Even if they're doing alright together today, it's no guarantee that one of them won't suddenly turn aggressive and you could end up with dead chinchillas.

And finally, C. I'll leave talking about breeding to those members with experience (and you really, really should read through the breeding threads here to learn about breeding quality, the risks, the monetary and time sacrifices to having babies, etc) but if you do end up with baby chins, you're going to need another kit-safe cage (no ledges, small spacing between bars, etc) to put mom and the babies in for their safety and so that she can't get pregnant again because that would put a lot of strain on her.

Every good piece of info I've learned about chinchillas came from this forum, so I really, really recommend you read through the breeding threads and take into consideration what the experienced breeders who comment on this thread tell you, because I promise that all they want is for Freddie and your new lady to be safe, healthy, and happy.

Please read the new chin owner FAQ and the breeding and babies FAQ. I feel like you jumped into this without thinking or planning. Please research, put your chins in quarantine and listen to the advice given you here or you may end up with dead chins with no one to blame but yourself for lack of education. I implore you, please do the right thing by your chins. They are smart animals with huge personalities and are very loving. Show them you deserve to be their chin parent.

^^^^^ This.

Definitely watch for any signs of aggression. Pulled fur is a huge sign something is amiss. Did you buy your chins from a breeder? I hope that they are old enough for breeding and have been evaluated for quality.

If they get along and breed, you have to make sure that the mother chin can deliver kits through her pelvic opening. If she is too young or too small, breeding her could end up in disaster.

If you have any questions, please ask. It may be a good idea to separate them until the female is old enough. If you don't have a good mentor to help you with getting into chinchilla breeding, we may be able to find a more local breeder to give you some pointers or show you what to breed for and help you with your goals.

you better make sure your prepared for kits if your going that route. I almost lost my first litter because i wasn't fully prepared. It was by pure chance he survived.

And once a kit is weaned, someone will have to be separated. Other wise you could have chin family interbreeding.

Ive done alot of research. I got them both off a breeder and they lived together before so i though they would be ok?
Freddie is nearlly 1 and She is nearlly 2 they seem to be doing really well no fur pulling etc they just snuggle alot x
