The paragraph after the first break is the main part if you want to skip to it!!

So if anyone has seen my other threads kickin' around you may know already that my chin, Darrell, had to undergo surgery for this mouth issue. Anyways, the vet I've been taking him too isn't in town-(it's so hard to find a chin doctor!)-so we took him down Thursday night and he spent the night there and had his surgery yesterday morning. We went and picked him up last night and the bill was pretty insane. I talked with the vet to see what all went on and got the bill knocked down (they were giving me MORE buprenorphine even though I already had enough and a new med to switch with the metronidazole). Anyways, I didn't take the extra Buprenorphine nor did I take the other med to switch. (I can't remember what it was called but it started with a Z). It was to help with any pain. Instead they told me I could lower the dosage of the metronidazole so he hopefully wouldn't get the 'drunk' effects from it. (nerological issues)
Anyways, they brought him and his meds out to me (they gave me the refilled/new buprenorphine by accident but I'm not complaining). Darrell was all mopey looking but I thought it was just from the surgery and he always looks mopey when going to/leaving the vet.
So I pay my bill and head home. I didn't give him any meds because I wanted to wait until this morning so I could get him on a good med schedule and I had no clue when they gave him meds last. But during the night before I went to bed I noticed he was being weird. Just sleeping a lot, looking kind of dead, you know? And I kept checking on him and what not and figured again, it was a long day and he was out from the surgery.

But now this morning I got up at 4am with my boyfriend (he was going to work) and noticed Darrell was laying kind of weird and so I picked him up and brought him out and now he's laying on me but he's laying REALLY oddly. Again, the only way I can describe it is he looks dead. (he's breathing, don't worry!) I gave him his meds thinking maybe he's in pain and that's why but it's been an hour and no change. ALSO his nose is runny now and he's kind of sneezy. He doesn't fight me at all, his ears are down, his tail is down, I laid him on his back for a minute so I could get a look at his mouth area and he didn't protest at all and just kind of flopped into position.
Every time i have taken him to the vet he has come back worse. In all honesty it feels like he's going to pass on me today (as weird as it is I've had several cats pass on me and they've all looked pretty much the same as my poor Darrell). I feel like I've been ripped off and like they really have made things worse.

The first time I went in he was acting pretty normal except for not eating hay, losing weight, and having his penis stuck out but then of course they told me what was ACTUALLY going on so they gave me the 3 meds. I put him on the meds right away and he gradually got worse. I took him back and they told me to keep giving him the meds and that he'd lost more weight. blahblahblah, foodfoodfood medsmedsmeds. Took him back and now this.

I just feel like I paid $600 (that I do not by any means have) for them to basically speed up my chin's death. Has anyone else had any similar experiences to this? Where you take them in and they come back worse?!

I wish I would never have had to put him through all of this :(

Also, I can't call the vet because they don't open for a few more hours and they'll just tell me to bring him in which I can't. It's 40 minutes away and I don't drive. This is horrible.

I hate to say this but I don't think your chin is going to make it. Sounds like the new 'vet' did not use gas to do the surgery and use something he shouldn't have. I wonder if all the chin has been though if it wouldn't be kinder to put him down - sounds like he has been in pain a long time

IMO something went wrong while under, I had it happen to me and was peesed that the vet actually returned the chin to me in that condition, looked dead in the carrier and was unresponsive, chin did not make it. This chin went in for a routine filing that had been done many times before. The vet could of at least showed some concern for his condition, but no that did not happen.

Darrell passed about 5 minutes after I posted this actually. I have to call the vet. They didn't say anything went wrong and they actually said he was eating a lot and even started eating hay again. I didn't see him eat anything at all.
He wasn't even home for 12 hours :( I'm mad at myself for putting him through all this vet stuff as it seemed to just speed up his death

I am so sorry this happened to you. I know exactly how you feel. I've had this happen 3 times now and I would really like to figure out why it happens. Each one was treated for different issues by different vets and died soon after returning home. Two of them had been sedated for treatment but the latest was not. The only common thing they had was pain medication. I have used the pain meds with my dental chin for years with no ill effects but these 3 just seemed to shut down after the medication was given. All three had been sick for sometime and were debilitated to begin with and I'm starting to think that there is a tipping point that I haven't been able to identify. I wish I knew why it happens and how to for see the problem.

oh my goodness, 3 times?! I'm so sorry :( I feel like I somewhat blame the pain medication because once I started giving him those meds he went WAY down hill. It was very sad to just watch his health decrease. He was still bouncy and hungry and whatnot before all the meds, and during the meds he was still eating A LOT but wasn't quite as active and then yesterday after his procedure he seemed to just crash extremely quick.

Where are you and what city was this vet. There are so few that I trust around me.

I live in Waterloo but I had to take him to Guelph. I couldn't find anywhere here that dealt with small exotics and I'd heard good things about Campus Estates so I went there. I feel like they are good vets but just maybe not so great with such big issues in small exotics :(

Some chins do not handle stress well. The stress of illness on top of the treatment at the vet is enough to do just make them shut down. Once a chin gives up, it's not long after that they pass. Some chins also do very badly under anesthesia. I have yet to have a chin die from using pain medication, but I have only used Metacam.

To the OP - I'm very sorry for your loss. :(

:(

I totally agree and in my case it may have just been coincidental that the pain meds seem to trigger it. I just wish I had a crystal ball to help me determine which chins were going to shut down on me. Even then I'm not sure I could have done anything different.

I know they just overhauled the small animal clinic so I really don't know how it is now. I'm in Mississauga and my chin savvy vet is here and it excellent.

I'm sorry for you loss. You did everything you could.
