My chin had a female kit. She will be 2 weeks on thursday. When can I put ledges and shelves back in the cage? I've heard its not good because momma may land on the baby, but that doesn't seem to appear to be a problem with these two. They both act like a spaz and popcorn around the cage together like crazy. The baby even climbs to the very top of the cage and then jumps off!!! Right now the only things I have in the cage are a wooden hidey house, a litterbox, and a few wood chews on the ground. I was thinking of putting the ledge back in about 1/4 of the cage up. Would this be safe? Or is it still too early regardless of how playful the baby is?

You can try with some lower ledges. I do not remove ledges at all in my colonies. But If you are concerened start with just the lower ledges

You also want to make sure that the ledges are all the same height. If there are multiple places for her to leap around on she may slip and cause the "falling down the stairs" effect. With a cage like that, perhaps putting in large+wide shelves, kits will have more room to gain balance. Kits are always so preciously fragile.
Even when I saw this pic I thought, "Oh snap". Ive always been run breeding, so the wiring on the sides of mine arent that high. I know kits/chinchillas are still very resilient, but I dont know, I feel safer keeping mom in a lower cage. But regardless, shes probably going to grow out to be a cute trouble-maker haha

I have the ledges low enough for baby to get to mom. By the way thats a great picture of the kit climbing. Many people do not understand what new kits are capable of. This picture is a perfect example why you should baby proof a cage.
