Hi, I currently adopted a male chinchilla about 3 years old and my current one is a male approx 2 1/2 years old. I put their cages side by side to get them used to each other but tonight, I held my new chinchilla up to my existing chinchilla's cage and he tried nipping at my existing chinchilla through the bars of the cage. Will this stop? Is this a sign of aggression?

chinchilla's need to be quarantined (spelling?) for 30 days in a different room before they are introduced to another chin.

Thats what I did for a month.

Then for 2 months, I had 2 separate cages where they can sniff but not enough space to be able to hurt each other or touch.

Not all chins can get together. For my case this is what I did.

For about 1.5 months they had separate cages. Every few days I will supervise play time so they can used to each other's scent. They sometimes were kinda aggressive or try to play with each other. Regardless no fighting or biting occurred. After 2 months, I would clean both their cages and then for a week would place Bam Bam into Tum Tum's cage to see the reaction. There was no attacking. But after a little while, I would place Bam Bam back into his cage. I wanted Tum Tum to get used to Bam Bam going into the cage. After a month then, I supervised the whole day where I left Bam Bam in for an entire day. That worked just fine THANKFULLY. =D Then took Bam Bam out and did it for the entire weekend. I always put Bam Bam back when i went to sleep just incase. After the weekend, I cleaned the cage again and kept them together in a box of dust bath where they chilled. After cleaning, I then placed the 2 of them together. Since then they were doing great.

Now, everyone seems to have a different way of doing it and unfortunately not all chins are going bond. The worst case scenario is that they would have to be separate cages. It takes some time and patience. I think Tum Tum just needed to express dominance being the older chin. But now he looks after Bam Bam all the time. =D

Good luck!
