Hello

I need some advice regarding introducing a new baby male chin to my current adult male chin. Some background information. I brought a adult male chin less than a year ago. Because by my schedule, I couldn't spend too much time with him regularly. Recently, my current chin seems to be rather lonely and bored. So I am thinking of getting him a male playmate.
I found a month old male baby chin that I am interested in buying. I need some advice as to how to go about introduce a baby male chin to an adult male chin. Should I wait for the baby chin to be a little older (> 3 month old) before attempting to introducing them or should I try to introduce the baby while he is young?

Thank you

ill let someone else comment about the intro part, but at one month old the baby chin is not ready to be separated form his mother yet. They are generally weaned around 8~ weeks give or take. And hopefully kept a little while after for observation to make sure they are eating/drinking on there own.

Not sure on the age thing. The best thing would be to keep them in seperate cages for a period of time. Try and keep them next to each other (but not in biting distance) just so they can get used to each other's scents. Start introducing them at play times. Hopefully, there should be no friction but you can't always guarantee with males really.

You should definitely wait for the baby chin to be older before putting them in the same cage as the adult chin can harm the baby chin easily. In the meantime, if you're planning to get the baby chin, first quarantine him in another room for up to a month and when nothing is wrong, then you can place the two of their cages in the same room such that they're able to see each other. You can then follow on as to how to bond chinchillas properly. There are a few useful threads in the forum that you can refer to. Bonding can take up to a year.

Please do not purchase a 1 month old baby. It needs to stay with its mother until it is 6 to 8 weeks old. It still needs to nurse from her. Definitely, do not put a kit that young in with an adult other than its mother. If the older chinchilla does not hurt it, it will probably die because it is not able to nurse. If the seller is telling you that it will bond better if you bottle feed it the last couple of weeks, they are wrong and need to get out of breeding.

As far as introducing them goes, you first need to quarantine the now chinchilla in a separate cage and room for 30 days. After the quarantine, you can use the introduction method of your choice. There is a thread on introducing chinchillas that explains some of the methods that are commonly used.
