What a funny story xD
I just quickly glanced at the pic at first and i'm like 'WHOA!!!??' but then I realized it wasn't a chin of course.
Hope everything works out well :))

Hope you enjoy your new pet :) First I was amazed at your story and then I admit I burst out laughing when I saw the picture.

Your great story continues! im sure you will take good care of him.

Wow, this gets more and more interesting. An american pika you say? Thanks saffron. Actually i guess he kind of does. If he was wild and not an escaped pet, i'm not sure if i should keep him, but he would be neat. He's been slowly warming up to me over the last couple days. took a raisin from my fingers yesterday.
That was the other thing that threw us off, even though he's been really shy, he's been really relaxed. (or maybe just scared stiff).
Anyways, i'm literally off to the vet, i'll keep you posted.

I agree, it looks like a degu to me too. What a great story! :)

If your heart is set on getting a chinchilla, one modification I'd make to the cage is to get rid of ramps and install your own wooden ledges, made of a chinchilla-safe wood. Chinchillas like to hop from shelf to shelf, and they like to chew on the wood.

Also, a fleece liner on the bottom of the cage would help any pet's feet feel better, whether you keep your degu or get a chinchilla.
