Hi Everyone,
Just thought I'd introduce myself. I also have two quick questions at the bottom if you just want to hit that up. I have an interesting story about how I came to be a chin owner. Hopefully it's not too long. My handle is bamboodragon, from canada and I'm currently working on my masters degree in mathematics.

My brother is a custom finishing carpenter and from time to time they have to trap and exterminate pests that get into the houses that are under construction. They had been noticing strange prints in the sawdust every morning unlike any they had seen before, even the exterminator they called in hadn't seen them before. After trying to trap it for a few weeks using various methods, they finally caught it in a non-lethal squirrel trap. They had no idea what it was but having iphones quickly came to the conclusion it was a chinchilla. The offer went up on facebook to see if anyone wanted him. I did. I decided to call him (or her) Chancho, like from "Nacho Libre" ;)
(I know what it means in spanish, but hey, oh well)

The accepted theory is that he was someone's pet and escaped then lived in the wild for at least two weeks since that's how long my brother was trying to catch him. I have no idea how old he is but I think he's young because he's smaller than most pictures i've seen. Also, being in the wild he probably lost a little weight. I got him friday afternoon and have been reading about chins incessantly since then. I love the little guy already and really want to take good care of him. Gonna set up a vet appointment and just patiently try to earn his trust.

Right now the only real question is: How do I get him to take his dust bath. I tried putting the dust (blue cloud brand) in a store bought chin bath bowl and left the top off. I also tried a large jar tipped on its side. He didn't use either of them. He's incredibly skittish so i'm reluctant to just pick him up and drop him in there. Any suggestions?

Also, what can I use for 'treats' while trying to earn his trust? I've heard raisins, no raisins, some raisins. I read somewhere that rose hips were good? What's healthy but enticing?

Anyways, that's a pretty long intro. I just want to make sure he's well looked after so if someone could help me with the dust bath thing I'd really appreciate it.
Peace

Wow! What an interesting way to become a chin owner! Hopefully, you post pics of the little guy soon :)
I wouldn't give him raisins to gain his trust. Lord only knows what the poor little thing has been surviving on, and raisins should only be given rarely as they are full of sugar. A cheerio or rosehip would be a better choice....or a nice twig / stick ( check out Ronda's website to stock up on wood & Chancho will be a very happy chin :) )

I bet that after he settles in a little, he will take a bath! After everything that this poor little fellow has been through...he probably doesnt trust anything right now. After your vet check-up, it will just take time and patience! So glad he ended up with you!

Wow what a story. Glad he is with someone who cares. As said the poor thing will take a while to trust anyone. Please go to the FAQ on proper chin care so you give him the proper foods and not give him treats that can harm him. Again so glad you cared and are giving him what he desperately needs now. Hopefully his digestive system isn't so messed up that you will have problems with him. Good luck

Ditto with the rosehips, bit of shredded wheat, a cheerio, old fashioned rolled oats (the non instant kind), chin-safe sticks/twigs, etc. for safe treats.

No fruits (dried or fresh), vegetables, nuts, and seeds for treats!

He may not be willing to take a dust bath since he's scared. Try different containers and just leave it in the cage for about 15 minutes and just leave him alone. He might feel too vulnerable if you're around. It will take time, but he will learn to trust you.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the cool responses. Really looking forward to being part of the community. Also, thanks for the tip on healthy snacks. I don't think i'll be giving him anymore raisins. (very rarely).
Here's a pic of the little guy.
(hopefully this works)

Really? this is TOTALLY AWESOME! The story of how i got my first chin is ongoing. This adds a hilarious new element to it though :hilarious: I guess the bushy tail and big ears threw us all off. First thing is first, off to the vet to be safe, never know what he might have had, then off to the wild to release him, then off to the pet store to buy a chinchilla. Having read about them non stop for the last 2 days (you think I would've clued in, i just thought he was half starving), it turns out it's just the kind of pet I would like to take care of; and let's face it, i've got all the supplies now.
that exterminator must be the worst exterminator ever, never seen packrat tracks before? sheesh. guess i'm the sucker. :hmm:

Wow, this gets more and more interesting. An american pika you say? Thanks saffron. Actually i guess he kind of does. If he was wild and not an escaped pet, i'm not sure if i should keep him, but he would be neat. He's been slowly warming up to me over the last couple days. took a raisin from my fingers yesterday.
That was the other thing that threw us off, even though he's been really shy, he's been really relaxed. (or maybe just scared stiff).
Anyways, i'm literally off to the vet, i'll keep you posted.

What ever it is it could be a domestic animal (was someone's pet). If so I would not release him to the wild. Also if you want a chinchilla looks for rescues in your area.

I agree - as soon as I saw the picture I thought whoa what a horrible looking chinchilla but then thought - hey that is a degu (they are loosely related to chinchillas). Good luck with him.

:hilarious:
Omg, I too saw the pic and was like holy crap! You picked um some wild rat?! Ewww. Then I looked closer and also thought Degu.

LOL! I laughed a lot at this! I was looking at the picture and thought, hm...that's a strange looking chin....:tease: Quite the story!!

Hope all went well at the vet's!

Good luck expanding your fur family :)
