HI, Hershey is very very active and jumps all the time and always tries to climb the cage walls and then jumps off the walls while about 3 feet up. I noticed yesterday that he looked like he hurt himself. When he isn't up in the morning trying to get out of his cage then I know something is wrong. He is moving very slow and is cautious about where he goes. I let him out to watch him walk and he is not himself. He moves slow when trying to climb a very small distance. I picked him up to give him some CC because I noticed his hay wasn't that low and he made screeching noises but then settled into my lap once his legs were tucked in. I do not want to disturb him because it is probably better to let him rest. Has this happened to anyone else. At the moment the hospital where I was taking my chins no longer has an exotic department but I do not think they can do anyhting unless I go holistic like acupuncture. I am giving him .01 ml of metacam once a day for some pain relief but is that enough. I have to find another vet that I can trust in my area. I live in Caldwell, NJ. Thanks

We are not vets here, and without seeing the animal we can not make a correct diagnosis, only guesses. In this case the symptoms seem vague and need to be examined by a veterinarian to receive treatment. You need to get searching, start calling, and find a vet in your area that will see chins. It definitely sounds like something is wrong and needs veterinary attention ASAP. Hopefully today since most clinics are closed on the weekends and I would not wait that long.

The only symptom I can really see listed is that he's lethargic.

Is he eating? Pellets? Water? Is he pooping? Is he wiping at his mouth? Is his nose or eyes watering? His he drooling? Will he eat a treak okay? Is he stretching or laying weird?

It could be anything from bloat, to stasis, to a fall. If you can give us more information we might be able to help you get some ideas of what it might be that you can take back to the vet, etc.

The only symtom he has is if you hurt your back and your walk was off. He is eating, drinking, alert and when I go into his cage he pokes his head out to see me. He seems like he hurt his hind area. either his back or legs but I think he hurt his back. I am looking for a vet who knows exotics. I have been to some in my area who claim to know exotics but they do not.

I use a vet in Marlton, NJ...........may be a bit far for you. She used to be in Mercer county but she moved to the Banfield inside Petsmart. If it is a place you are willing to travel, I can give you the phone number.

The other place that I have used that may be closer to you is Oakhurst Vet Hospital.
It is on the eastern coast of Jersey. They are kinda expensive but have a brand new top of the line facility. Check out their website:

The vet I used no longer works there, however; they have a whole "wing" dedicated to exotics. and they have digital xray equipment. even a small rodent specialist will be able to see if there is a break and if not be able to prescribe pain relief.

I took Hersey to Oakhurst Animal Hosp. today and met with doctor Applegate. He was very nice and checked Hershey and told me he doesn't feel like he has any broken bones and he is running around and is eating. He thinks he had the wind knocked out of him. Thanks for all your input. They are actually cheaper than Redbank. But they took good care of my chins at Redbank.
