One of my chins has a infection on his muzzle - probably a bite wound. He is pretty aggressive with his females. So his mate probably bit him. Anyway, he has an appointment with the vet today. This vet doesn't know too much about chins but I feel an infection is an infection and should be treated the same as all animals. The only problem I see is he probably will be put on antibiotics. I will tell the vet, no bactril and please give me tri-meth.
However, I don't know the 'measurements per pound or if the tri-meth has to be a certain strength. What should I tell the vet with prescripting tri-meth

He has a book that will give him all the info necessary: The Veterinary Formulary.

Barb--Dr Goode gave me a HUGE bottle of trimeth (sulfa) the pink stuff, I mean huge. It is the size of a regular bottle of for humans and it was only $9.00. i also have endless refills and it is the regular formulation for children and then they calculate by weight how much to give to your chin. Richie weighs 655 g and I am to give him .04cc 2x per day.
If you would like, I can put some in a container for you to have. You know where I live. let me me know asap and if i am not home i will gladly leave it on my porch.

Eh, you can use it for chins, but I've not really had great success with it. Try and see if it works. If not, ask for the TMZ instead.

For future reference (this is in an FAQ, but it wouldn't be bad to bring out in forum)

Remember antibiotics to be avoided by using the PLACE rule.

Penicillin
Lincomycin
Ampicillin, Amoxicillin
Clavamox AKA Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate)
Cephalosporins, Clindamycin

-----------------------------------------------------------
Safe antibiotics
Bactrim AKA Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim
Baytril AKA Enrofloxacin
Chloramphenicol
Gentamycin
Doxycycline
Flagyl

Now that I am settled down and have my chin (Joshua) in a small cage for now. Here is what the vet did. I usually go to Dr. Janice Goode but she is now in an office a hour and 1/2 away and as I said I figured an infection is an infection. The vet drained and flushed the abcess. He said he was going to 'put Josh under' just lightly and give him pain meds. When I got home and looked at the bill, I realized he had not use gas but midazolam (5 mg) He also used buprenex/.3 mg (pain med). Josh is groggy and I guess he will be for a while. Is this treatment ok for chins since it wasn't a very high amount?? - I am concerned that gas wasn't use to put Josh under

Gas isn't always necessary. For minor stuff on an otherwise healthy chin, I would prefer sedation to gas.

>.04cc 2x per day

?? .4cc ?

Chloramphenicol this is what miss chloe was on and her infection healed up very quickly (you must stay ontop of this the infection of the nose spreads very quickly) (sadly the cat got her 3 days ago :()

Just to let you know Josh is acting completely normal today - I am warm compressing the wound twice a day and it seems to be draining fine - Thanks for the help
