Skunks- AL, AK, Ar, AZ, CA, CO, CN, DE, GA, HA, ID, IL, KA, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MO, MN, NB, NV, NC, ND, OK, RI, SC (after current captive animals have died), TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV.

I'm guessing that the ones in bold are supposed to be Connecticut (CT), Kansas (KS) and Nebraska (NE)? I was slightly confused because NB normally stands for New Brunswick (Canada), but KA and CN had me puzzled for a minute. Just wanted to clarify.

Here in Nebraska, I know that hedgehogs are banned from Douglas county (Omaha), and I think sugar gliders may be as well. Omaha also has some major restrictions on pit bulls and similar dog breeds. The restrictions on these breeds and species are not state-wide though.

Apparently we had some huge infestation here a long time ago, so they trapped them all and killed them and then made them illegal.

I see. Still, it's not like they got every single one of them. :p There has to still be some rats running around there!

Are domesticated rats able to live without a human caring for them? Can they take care of themselves and forage for food? I know, dumb question. But, I wonder if having a domesticated rat would really pose an issue if it were to get out.

Chinniechantel;11391I wonder why skunks are illegal in almost all the states- I had no idea. Why?[/QUOTE said:
Skunks in the wild have a higher than usual incidence of rabies.

Yes, I do believe a colony of domestic rats, if let loose, can become feral and reproduce and live just fine in the wild. But I think it's weird rats are illegal as they are native to almost every nook and cranny of the world. It's not like someone let pet rats loose they would be introducing a non-native species.

I was going to guess the rabies issue for why skunks are illegal in so many states. Skunks and opposums are really at risk for rabies here in VA, more than a lot of other animals.

If degus weren't illegal I would probably have a couple (same sex). I think they are so cool! I wish hedgehogs weren't illegal either.

While there are species of rats that are found around the world, the pet rat (Rattus norvegicus, the brown rat) is an introduced species. The other rat that is commonly found running around is the black rat, Rattus rattus. Among other things, the whole stowaway-on-a-sailing-ship thing is true... and at least partly how the rat became so widely spread around the Old world (and probably the New).

And just because I can, since it's easier to list what's *legal* in CA than what's not, I'm just going to add CA to the list. [off the top of my head - legal: livestock. Dogs, cats. Domestic rabbits, rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas. Many reptiles and fish. Most psittacines (parrots), many non-native songbirds.]

Hedgies are illegal here in GA too..

Pitbull bans are dumb.. they're the best breed to own! Maybe I'm just biased.. ;)

I am upset that hedgehogs are illegal in PA! I wanted a hedgie, but I don't want to get introuble, but I did get a hedgie charm for my Pandora bracelet! Wish they made a chinchilla charm...Pandora makes a lot of other animal charms...I will keep looking!
