I have been reading so many threads mentioning how certain animals are illegal in their city/state/country. I am curious to see if there are more I had no idea about. Let's make a list- just copy and paste it like the "Chins by state" thread. Add why if you know. Let's see how many rights we didn't know we had taken away! Thanks! I will start-

Pitbulls- illegal in Miami Dade county
Sugargliders- illegal in Minneapolis/St.Paul

This should probably be done by state.

Pitbulls- illegal in Miami Dade county
Sugar gliders- illegal in Minneapolis/St.Paul
Hedgehogs - State of PA
Flying Squirrels - Connecticut
Ferrets - NYC, California

The list of what's illegal in California is WAAAAAY longer than the list of what's not, not even getting into local ordinances... http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/pdffiles/fg1518.pdf

The only one of the above that's not illegal in CA are pit bulls, because they're dogs.

Some that you might not think about... big cats (e.g., tigers, bobcats) and crosses with domestic cats are allowed in some states. Things like crocodiles are allowed in some states. Wolf hybrids (I don't think wolves) are allowed in some states. None of those are allowed in CA (wolf hybrids after a certain number of generations, I think 2, are though)

Maine is fairly restrictive. No hedgehogs or pet skunks. No native species can be kept as pets. Even rehabbers have to release within 1 year or euthanize the animal.

It would be easier to get a permit to keep a pigmy hippo than a hedgehog in Maine.

Like eqqus said, CA is pretty restrictive hedgehogs and ferrets are illegal. If you rehab a native species then you must release it.

But non-native species can be kept if you rehab (exactly why my roommates and I have pigeons!). So anyone in CA that wants pigeons, scrub jays, and starlings I believe- if you are up to rehabbing then you can keep em. Sort of strange, some places actually won't take sick animals that are non-native so it is left up to rehabbers.

I think it's amazing reading through this thread and seeing what animals aren't allowed in certain states.

Pit's are allowed here, but then when it comes time for insurance, watch out!! I really don't know what's illegal. So that is all I can share. Sorry.

Oh upstate NY

What frosts my buns is how darn hard it is to get a list of what you can and can't keep. PA's laws, for all the restrictions, are pretty simple: if it's native wildlife, you need a permit to rehabilitate or you can't keep it. So alligators and hot (venomous) southern US snakes are all right... at the discretion of the Fish and Game department, who have been just *so* reasonable about hedge hogs.

Wow, this is pretty crazy. Worse than I even thought. I wonder why skunks are illegal in almost all the states- I had no idea. Why?

Lol, that just seems stupid. We had a pet skunk when I was a kid, in MN. She had her own room. They are BIG, and I just remember that when she got mad she would stomp her feet and throw a fit. It was really cute. Her name was Violet.

They had pet skunks for sale in a pet store here awhile back (I'm in Indiana). I didn't realize that Indiana's one of the few states you CAN keep them in...

Cause they're stinky?

hat makes me sad....I love skunks and have wanted one as a pet for my entire life...it just sucks because you can have their stink glands removed, but I read that it can cause deep depression so you have to devote your life more than usual with a pet to keep it happy...

or just have your house smell to high heavens lol

You'll find raccoons aren't allowed most places as they are considered a vector species for rabies. Even most rehabbers aren't licensed to handle vector species.
