Hi all,
It has just come to my attention that a coworker of my husbands has a chin that is being kept in some really bad conditions. Currently the chin gets no social interaction,it is kept between a washer and dryer in a basement and has and was attacked by the owners dog. We are unsure of if the chin was badly injured or what. My husband heard all of this and immediately offered to take the chin but the coworker simply responded "My wife really wanted it so Id have to ask her and I dont think she'll give it up." :banghead: This entire story infuriated the both of us but I dont know if theres an animal cruelty division that handles the mistreatment of small pets. I almost know that if something as simple as keeping the chin away from heat has surpassed this ignorant owner that the chin is being horribley mistreated. What should I do ????

Unless they are willing to give the chin up, there isnt much you can do. I would ask if you could come see it and find out if it is badly hurt. You might be able to convince them to take it to a vet but they will only do what they choose to.

Yeah....maybe just make it sound like you are interested in seeing someone else's chin and see if maybe you could go over and just visit with their chin. Remember that you can't accuse people or come on too strong or people will shut down and not let you see what's going on. Situations like this have to be handled delicately.

I really hope that the chin is alright. A dog attack usually is pretty serious...there's so much internal damage that can be done without it immediately showing up on the outside. Poor chinnie...

I don't know what the laws are where you live but you could always call animal control! We just rescued a chinchilla that was living in dismal conditions. His fur was so greasy and he smelled so bad. It took hours of blue cloud, patience and a #4 grooming comb to get him looking better.

Lack of food, water, housing, or vet care is animal neglect and they can remove the animal from the home. How strict they are about the details per animal depends on how knowledgeable authorities in your area are.

Call the humane society. That is the least and probably the best you can do.

Sorry its taken so long to update. My husband and I were devastated to hear that the chin in question passed away. We dont know if the injuries from the dog attack or something else was the cause because the owners dont even seem to care. They tried selling us the cage and items belonging to the chin and when we went over to take a look at thier setup Im not sure how the little girl survived as long as she did. Everything was plastic, she was being fed carrots, broccoli and fortune cookies along with pet store chin food and treats that included stuff coated in yogurt and treats that were clearly for rabbits. The cage was so small it didnt even fit the wheel they bought which of course was wire. The little chinnys name was Marple, and I can say without hesitation shes in a much better place.

As sad as it is to say, I agree with you, the baby is definitely in a better place. Just hope they don't try to get another chin.:(.

That is so sad, im new to chinchilla owning but after having my 2 for only a few months cant understand why people dont take the time to do a bit of research. It takes 5 minutes to find out what they need.
