No, Skype is a free download as well :)
My sister got a cell phone for while she's there, so that works in case of emergencies or if you want to talk to someone right away, but the Skype is nice because you can see the person and talk as long as you want

Wow, how fun! I am so happy for you. I hope you have the time of your life! I used Skype for 2 months while I was in China, and it worked great. Some connections were better than others, but most days it was perfect.

Jersey is a beautiful island and a place I'd like to revisit in the future.
Make sure you visit London and Paris and check out all the sights.
And the very best of luck over the coming months!!

Thanks guys! I'm going NUTS in anticipation!

I arranged my housing and I'll be living in a small farm guest house practically on the water of Bouley Bay (north side of Jersey). I can easily walk to Durrell from there!

The next *86* days will not pass by fast enough!!!

I downloaded Skype - I'm using it's IM feature now. I thought I had a mic, but I don't, so I gotta get one. I'll probably have to get a webcam to give my mom peace of mind - she can see I'm still alive

alicyn - that is AMAZING! what an opportunity. my daughter went to china for a semester.

have a blast.

LOL being from the UK myself i did read this with interest - then when you sai you were gonig to Jersey it made me alugh loads. When iwsa out in washington a few years ag oa guy in an electrical store picked up on my accent and asked where i was from - told him England and he said"thats one of the islands isnt it" you can imagine i was a bit shocked and laughed rather a lot <> Jersey is a pimple compared to the UK as a whole - and its weather isa closer to the French than uk dampness - so thats one positive at least :) small flights form Jersey to Guernsey (its local sister island) and France and mainland UK can be quite cheap though :)

Jersey zoo is one of the best zoos in Europe for its conservation record so you have an excellent place there for you - the fund Gerald Durrell set up also does a loft of wildlife care and environment protection the world so it could be a good stepping stone for youfor the future :)

If you do make it over to England for visits then depending upon your interests thers a lot to do - i woul say fit in London, Cardiff and Edinburgh so you have done all three capital cities of the three main countries - and if you can - get over to Dublin too as it onlty a short hop but a really great city - and another country to add to your list.

If you let me know when you are over in hte UK and able to travel about then it might pay to try and see some of the chin breeders over here and how they do things - might know someone local to the areas you are going :)

Haha - yes that is true, Jersey is very small. But around here if I say I'm going to Jersey, they think I mean the state "New Jersey" (and honestly, why would I be DYING from anticipation to go there? no offense NJers!). So I've been saying the UK first, and narrowing it down to Jersey.

I am so excited that it is so near France - I took 3 years of french in high school so I can eek out a few cohesive sentences - it's given me a reason to brush up on my french!

I still have no idea how much free time I will have and how many days off in a row I'll get, but I'm hoping I can spend a couple weekends each in England and Wales - Scotland and Ireland would be amazing! Then during my week and a half mini-vacation I'll hit France and *maybe* get to Germany or Italy. Though I only know how to count to ten in German!
