I went in to check on my chinchillas this morning and discovered that Violet (my violet girl) had given birth to twins. Both are boys, one weighed in at 52 grams and the other at 53 grams. Nothing about that was surprising. You can't miss it when this momma is pregnant. The surprise came after I gave momma time to dry them off completely. I took the boys out and noticed that one was a violet. I kinda shook my head and asked "how!" This girl used to be paired with an extra dark ebony and has always given me medium eb/violet carriers. I had her with a different male this time. Well. I went back to my pedigrees to see if I could figure this one out. Turns out that the kits' grandmother (an extra dark ebony), on the sire's side, has a space on her pedigree three generations back that is blank. I had forgotten all about it since the majority of her pedigree is ebony and the rest of her pedigree is filled out, including color. When I looked at everything that came since the blank, it was all ebony so it was probably carried for a few generations. Good thing I have pedigrees on my animals or I would never have been able to figure out how the little came to be. BTW, I will post pictures this weekend.

Congrats on the babies. Not completely surprised this happened. Had it happen once with a chin who had no violet mentioned for three generations in their pedigree too. It completely caught me off guard when their offspring produced violets and white violets at another breeder's home. I've had ebony babies born twice now, too, out of chins who didn't have any ebony mentioned for several generations in the pedigrees.

It's good being able to look back at a pedigree and find out something could carry for so long in the lines, I think. It will be nice to see pics when you got a moment!

Congrats - violets are nice surprises. I had a violet from a pair that one was 6 generations back. I knew it was there but didn't know if it would 'come out' when paired with a violet

Hooray for us recessive gene folks*! What a lovely little surprise she gave you!

I am the only blue-eyed kid in my family, so I learned about recessive genes and their possibilities early! My mom had nearly black eyes they were so dark brown, and Dad had hazel, so I learned to say "well Grandpa has blue eyes, and so does Granddad - so I can TOO be your kid!"

Pictures!!!!!

I FINALLY took pictures of the kits yesterday. Here they are so you all can enjoy the cuteness. The violet is named Jor-el and his medium eb brother is Zor-el.

I covet your little chinnies! Why do you all torment me so with all your cute little babies??? You make me want to fill my house with chinchillas!

I, too, love their coloring. They are absolutely adorable. I look forward to more pictures of them as they get older! Keep us posted. Those of us who do not have tiny babies have to live vicariously through those of you who do.
