I'm going crazy waiting for my two girls to be ready to come home. They'll be ready on May 28th. I'm getting very impatient, but they're worth the wait. Haha!

Luckily the breeder is great about sending me pictures. I love watching them grow! I'm super excited. This is going to be a long month. But I still have a lot to do to get their cage ready, so that will help me pass the time (hopefully)

They are adorable! I'm sure the 28 can't get here fast enough for you!

IDK, I get a little nervous seeing them outdoors...

I'll try to think of some names, although I am terrible at that! Congrats on your future chinnies!

Yeah, she said they were only outside for less than 5 minutes so she could take pictures. They were inside a very tall play pen, and the weather here was a beautiful 65 degrees outside that day.

Thank you! I'm terrible at names, too. Haha!

Is she not dusting them??

I know your excitement, I was so excited for my first pair, that week waiting to go get them was torture! I can only imagine a month wait, it'll be worth it!

I'm sure she is. The photos were just really dark and bad quality, so I did some Photoshopping and it ended up making their fur look weird. But the picture didn't start out that way. Adding a lot of contrast did. Haha!

I even have a wonderful exotic vet in my area. They're pretty expensive though. $65 just for a visit and check up. But they're very nice and really well educated with exotics. They were great with my guinea pig. Just wish they were cheaper. Haha!

But they're only 15 minutes away from my house, so that's nice. And I already called just to be extra sure they take chinchillas. They do a ton of exotic care, including squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife. Plus, every patient has their own online account where you can check all of your previous records, upload photos, or talk to a vet. Great place!

I have a question.

They're both almost exactly the same age, but they're from different litters. She says that they both interact with each other often, but they do not currently live in the same cage. Since they will be a little over 12 weeks when I purchase them and they will go into a new cage (neutral environment) should I still quarantine them for a while? I plan on caging them next to each other for a few days but since they've already interacted with each other should I still wait the 30 days?

Just want to make sure I do everything right for these girls.

Adorable! Love their markings!

I'd say to start them off separate. Always always double check their sexes when you get them no matter what the breeder says. I'm assuming quarantine would be useless since the breeder has them interact already, but someone more knowledgeable than me might know better.

I'd keep them separate at first cause you never know if they're going to get along in the same cage as well as they do now. This way even if they do get along, you'll already have the backup cage which is something you need anyway.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to start off separating them. I don't want to put either of them in their final cage until they're ready to move in together since I want it to still have a neutral smell when I introduce them into it.

I was thinking the full 30 day quarantine wouldn't matter since they've already interacted. Maybe a week would be ok as long as they're doing well when they interact and when their cages are next to each other?

I'm 100% going to check their sex when I finally meet them! As cute as kits are, I'm nowhere near ready to have that responsibility yet. I would want to do a few more YEARS of research before starting breeding.

Actually I would put them together and see how they do. The younger they are, the easier they are to pair. Moving into an all new environment in all news cages, they won't have any territory issues (kits usually don't anyway) and the 'scary' experience may help them bond.

Just keep an eye on them as they get older and watch for any signs of bickering.

The 30 day quarantine doesn't really apply to two animals coming from the same person at the same time. It's more of quarantining any new animals from your own animals at home.

That sounds great, Stackie!

The drive to bring them home will be over two hours and I've heard they bond under stress and a long car ride can help. They'll be in two separate cavy cages from Quality Cages, but if they're close enough to each other (without being too close) hopefully they will bond.

If I put them in their cage together the first night, I'll camp out in that room so I can make sure no one is fighting.

Well a week wouldn't be a quarantine, since many diseases wouldn't show up. If you wanted to wait a week so that could be situated, that's a whole other thing and seems like a pretty good idea. The week wouldn't do anything for them health-wise, but personally I would consider the quarantine compromised already (I'm interested to hear some opinions from breeders on this subject though)

That's what I was thinking, Isabella. I am assuming she keeps all her chins in a large chin room or barn area. I haven't seen her setup yet, so I'm not sure. I won't see them until I pick them up (since they're over 2 hours away, I can only make the trip once). So I was thinking the quarantine wouldn't really matter. I just want to make sure they won't fight.

So a week might be a good idea. Or if they get along right away in their neutral environment since they're so young, that would be great. But I just want to make sure I'm careful.

The breeder suggested just putting them in a neutral cage when I bring them home and they should be fine. I just want to make sure this is correct information before I do it. So opinions are greatly appreciated!

:)

I agree with Stackie (sorry my post didn't really make sense. I left the page up for a while and wrote it while replies were still on the first page haha)

It does make sense to put them together since they're so young.

Ok, that's what I was thinking, too. That's very good news to hear.

Now I just need to get my cage ready! I'm just waiting for some wood shelves I purchased. Then I'll take some pictures and see what you guys think.
