Can chin's catch what their owners may have?

I think I am coming down with the flu, or at the very least, a cold and was wondering if I could pass either on to Herby?

They can't "catch" our colds, but, hey can develop a URI from some strain of our illness that can effect them. I would wear a mask and wash your hands before and after going near or handling your chin, or have someone else handle the chores until you are feeling better.

Thanks Brittany! I will wear the mask and gloves, and if need be get a Tyvek suit! It is going to be so hard to say no to her chinny kisses though I just love chinny kisses!

I didn't know there is a sickness that can be passed through species. Thats interesting.

Chins can get herpes simplex 1 and it is most often fatal, be very cautious when dealing with chins if you have a cold sore.

And, be careful if you or anyone around you has strep throat. There definitely are things that chins can catch from people. I remember that thing about the chin catching herpes...that was terrible.

There are things that can be passed on to our pets. Sometimes we can be more dangerous to them than they are to us. For instance there was a cat in Iowa that died from H1N1. http://www.thebostonchannel.com/health/21540810/detail.html has some information about the flu and our pets.

Thank you for all the advice! It is much appreciated! I will definitely take a few days and do the basics for Herby and let my oldest son do the rest of what needs to be done for her, until I am over this cold or virus, which ever one it is.

I went and got some gloves and some masks so as to minimize the spread to both my chin and other pets and my kids..(well as much as I can from the kids anyway.)
