I debated about posting this, as I have a feeling some people will not like what is about to be said, and a debate may start. Mods--please, at the first sign of any problems close this thread. I'm hoping maybe a few people will see this, and learn the truth about the HSUS- Humane Society of the United States.

As many of you have seen i'm sure in my signature, I am highly against the HSUS. A background story, and yes it does involve the APBT.

We have all heard about the Vick dogs. "Pit bulls" that were taken from a dog fight bust. They are now in rescues, some are adopted, some are still in rescue. Out of those adopted- there are a few of them who are now therapy dogs, and others still that are completing their training. The HSUS wanted these dogs DEAD. The pushed to have these dogs euth'd. Thankfully, the ASPCA, Best Friends, Bad rap and other rescues stepped up to the plate. Instead of 50 dogs loosing their lives, 2 dogs who could not be adopted out were put down. The dogs were given a chance.

Go back a few years, and floyd boudreaux a well known APBT breeder, who DID fight dogs in the past was raided. Although he was awaiting trial, the HSUS killed every dog and PUPPY on his yard. Innocent dogs. The kicker? Floyd was AQUITTED. He was never charged with dog fighting--they did not have enough proof. Yet the HSUS KILLED his dogs. http://bluedogstate.blogspot.com/2008/10/pit-bull-breeder-floyd-boudreaux.html

Pat Patrick. Yard was raided. 150 dogs taken. All were killed. Thanks to the HSUS. Pat Patrick was aquitted from all charges. Again, all of his dogs were killed before his trail. http://bluedogstate.blogspot.com/2008/11/hsus-dogfight-czar-john-goodwin-fails.html

The most recent case, that happend just this week. Wildside Kennels. Busted for illegal dog fighting. Judge ordered 160 pit bulls to be killed. 60 of his adult dogs, 100 puppies. Several of those puppies were born in foster homes, and were weeks old. Finally, people are seeing what the HSUS is doing. and are speaking out against this. It is no longer 1990. We now know that dogs from fighting busts can be adopted out. Look at vicks dogs. In this case, Best Friends, Bad rap and other rescues stepped up to the plate. These dogs HAD PLACES TO GO. Funding to "rehab" them. Yet the HSUS killed these dogs. I believe feb 18th marked the death of Wild Side Kennels 160 dogs.

In all 3 cases, many dogs were killed that should never have been killed. These are not your thug-bred dogs that are out there attacking people. These are well bred dogs. True to the APBT breed, and personality--with temperments in mind. In Pat and Floyds case- they were found NOT GUILTY, yet their dogs were killed.

So for those who donate to the HSUS- your money is going to the needless slaughter of hundreds of dogs per year. Dog fighting needs to stop..but do not slaughter these dogs! It may not be a cute fluffy poodle...but it is a living, breathing dog.. And who knows- the next hoarder case they take in MAY BE a cute fluffy poodle--and they may slaughter them, too.

How many other needless deaths, of any breed of dog is the HSUS responsible for? Where is our money going? It's obviously not going to SAVE dogs. Perhaps for them to fund organzations like ALF?

For more information on the HSUS please see (and not all of these are pit bull websites..many dog people are waking up and smelling the coffee here):

Okay, I have a question. What is the difference then between HSUS and the ASPCA? How do you know if a shelter is run by either of those?
I honestly didn't know there was a difference between the two.

I've been hearing stories about this also. I understand that the shelters are full and no kills have been shutting down due to expenses in droves... but to order puppies born, raised and loved in a foster home to be killed is beyond heartless.

There was also a recent situation where a humane society pulled out over a 100 cats and kittens that were feral and semi feral cats out of a hoarder situation. Yes, some were sickly....but there was a rescue willing to at least give the kittens a chance. Some were tiny and could of been socialized. All were killed in less than 48 hours.

It's a tough situation. The shelters are even more full due to the economy. More turning in and less adopting. It makes me mad that so many people are still buying dogs (and cats) while millions die.

EdIt: We have connecticut humane societies. Aren't they all tied in with HSUS?

Oh okay, I assume that that's just a common misconception that they run shelters then. Because I know many people say I'm going to go to the humane society and look at dogs.

You do have humane societys... then you have The Humane Society of the United States... They are the ones most known, who you see on the TV comercials, out there lobbying for your donations to help animals..The ones who put together the dog fight busts--and work with the local humane societys. They are the ones who then push to euth the dogs, and of course other animals. However, hey have no shelter...

It would not suprise me, Brenda if HSUS was the backbone of the hoarder case--and was lobbying to get those animals killed, and not adopted out to rescues.

I always think of the starfish story when these mass killing cases come up. Every life should be considered on a case by case basis.

The Starfish Story
Original Story by: Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…”
I made a difference for that one.”

Brenda that is awesome... I have never heard it before.

Many rescuers keep this story close to heart whenever someone says to them "you can't save them all so whats the difference? Why bother?" Well for the one that IS saved, it is all the difference in the world. It is life!

hmm... I didn't know there was a difference between these animal rights and animal welfare groups. So the local humane societies are not local branches of HSUS, if I'm understanding this correctly? Sorry, this is a bit confusing and I'm afraid I'm part of the uneducated public crowd that is unfamiliar with this sort of thing.

This is a little bit off topic, but I just don't understand why there can't be harsher laws regarding animal rights. It makes me sad when I read the paper and there's cases of animal abuse, etc. and these people get off with a tiny slap on the hand.

Omg, I just saw this. I am tearing up pretty badly. Every dog deserves its chance. This just, i feel, perpetuates the pitbulls are evil stereotype. I have seen many adorable sweet and loving pit bulls at the shelter i help out at. Also who knows when it will move on to another breed. For a while it was rotties who were evil and at one point German Shepherds.

This is why I think I like animals more than people...animals learn new things, soo many people just don't.
