ACK! CHINCHILLAS ARE HOUDINI INCARNATE!
Today I was cleaning Sonya's cage before bed, and the bottom door of her cage is such that, rather than being hinged on the bottom like the upper door, it is completely removable. If you want it attached, you clip the opened hinges on the top of the door frame--normally they'd be at the bottom. There is also a wire to keep it in place just in case.
Now, when I'm cleaning her cage and going from litter pan to water bottle, etc, I set the door between the bottom of the door frame and the wire--it stays up, but there's a 1.5 inch gap at the top.
Apparently when I fell asleep, I forgot to change it so that it was totally closed. :banghead:
I woke up to this strange, LOUD chewing noise. Bleary eyed I rolled (literally) out of bed and reached into Sonya's cage to give her a lava rock to chew on...but she wasn't in her cardboard box house!!! I realized at that point that I'd left that door open a tiiiiiny bit, and she had squeezed out somehow. So I started the search, and before I know it, she's staring at me in a 'if-I-don't-move-she-won't-see-me' sort of way, and after a (thankfully) short chase, she went back into her cage. And I couldn't get back to sleep
I'd only been asleep for maybe 4 hours...*sigh* Ah well.
So that's my story of Sonya's Great Escape. I'm surprised she got through...she's a fattie ;P
