ACK! CHINCHILLAS ARE HOUDINI INCARNATE!
Today I was cleaning Sonya's cage before bed, and the bottom door of her cage is such that, rather than being hinged on the bottom like the upper door, it is completely removable. If you want it attached, you clip the opened hinges on the top of the door frame--normally they'd be at the bottom. There is also a wire to keep it in place just in case.
Now, when I'm cleaning her cage and going from litter pan to water bottle, etc, I set the door between the bottom of the door frame and the wire--it stays up, but there's a 1.5 inch gap at the top.
Apparently when I fell asleep, I forgot to change it so that it was totally closed. :banghead:
I woke up to this strange, LOUD chewing noise. Bleary eyed I rolled (literally) out of bed and reached into Sonya's cage to give her a lava rock to chew on...but she wasn't in her cardboard box house!!! I realized at that point that I'd left that door open a tiiiiiny bit, and she had squeezed out somehow. So I started the search, and before I know it, she's staring at me in a 'if-I-don't-move-she-won't-see-me' sort of way, and after a (thankfully) short chase, she went back into her cage. And I couldn't get back to sleep :( I'd only been asleep for maybe 4 hours...*sigh* Ah well.

So that's my story of Sonya's Great Escape. I'm surprised she got through...she's a fattie ;P

its amazing how they can squeeze themselves through the tinest places!

HAHAHAHA That is too funny. Shelly did that this morning. Her daddy was giving her morning scratches and she had a funny look in her eye. I told him to stop and close the door because she is up to no good. He told me to stop being jealous. So I left. Next thing I hear "SHELLY!!!!" Yup, she bolted. It took me an hour to catch her. Brat.

Zoe did that the other day while I was cleaning her cage. I made the mistake of moving her cage too far back on the table and she dropped..yes dropped..between the table and cage bottom. An hour long game of hide and seek and Catch me if you can ensued after that..eventually she got into her dust house and I was able to put her back. Silly chinny..but you gotta love them!:)
