So I had my chinchilla out today for about 15-20 mins for playtime and put him back in his cage. Well immediately when I put him in the cage he started laying on the cool stones I have on the bottom.
I'm watching him right now and he keeps doing it periodically.
The temp. is 70 and I even felt his ears to see if they were hot since they aren't red. His ears arent hot and neither are his feet.
I'm kinda worried.

He is now laying on the stone with his head pressed against it and his eyes closed, then just got up and ran on his wheel for a bit, peed, and is laying on the stone again.

Probably a bit of both. Chins don't have much stamina. When they are out for playtime they do get hot and tired. Mine always lay down or "crash" immediately after playtime. At 70 degrees it's definitely not too warm. I'm sure he's just pooped out.

Thank you for the quick response Laurie!
He is acting a bit more himself now. He hasn't had playtime in about a week so maybe thats what did it. I gave him a dust bath and he is happily chewing on an apple stick :)

He was probably trying to escape Morgan LOL! He was like--playtime?! I'm outta here! Leonard is the same way. He acts like he never gets out then he runs himself ragged. He loves his Elvis pillow as much as I love mine LOL!

No stamina? I've a 6 yr old violet wrap male who's either "on the wheel" or sleeping!
Wish I'd put a odometer on his wheel - he's probably 100,000 miles on it!
He's in a trio, and probably fathered 30 kits - but that only takes a second! LOL!
Won't even come off for shreddies, I gotta stop the wheel!
Some do overdo playtime, though, and need time to cool down!

My new guy who is 7 and a retired breeder never had playtime until he came to live with us. I only let him run for about 15 minutes at a time but he has gotten a routine where as soon as he is back in his cage he smooshes against the bars and lays on his marble tile. I think he enjoys the cool after his run time but i don't think it's anything to worry about.

LOL I already know that toby is a Houdini in the making! He always jumps the metal pen I have him enclosed in for playtime. It's about 3 feet high too! I really need to get a lid of fleece haha

And thanks for all the other responses guys! Maybe he does just like the cool of the stones.

Buddy does the same thing only he doesn't make it to his cage. He nuzzles into the corner of my shower, flops on his side, and sleeps in the middle of playtime. When he is rested he runs around again!

My chin does the same thing. It used to really scare me, but I just keep a close eye on her and pretty soon she's ready to play again.

I had a cage full escape last night and have a blast. They are dead tired today from all that exercise, Faith even let me put an eye drop in without fuss. no need to worry a hot or lathargic chinchilla looks very very different from just really tired

Thank you, this phrase definitely made me feel better. I've just never seen him do that before and kinda made me scared.
I also found it weird when he would just get up in the middle of laying on the stones with his eyes closed and run on his wheel for a couple seconds. Silly chin! He just likes to make mommy worry!

And thanks to everyone else! :)
