I have 2 Chihuahua, Demon & Diesel, who I've crated trained. They took to it very well once I got everyone in the house to listen to me and to stop confusing them. (I'd put them in the crate whenever I'd leave to go anywhere, even if just for 20 minutes, but my parents would put them in the "doggies" where I didn't want them due to them being dominant with our older male) We got that worked out and they are pretty good with the crate.

Now of a night time after we put them to bed they start whining a lot, which I figured out. They have to go potty, they are younger and won't potty in their crate. So between 1:30am - 3am they have to go potty. Then they come in and go back to their crate to go back to bed. When they do this I give them a treat for it.

With the amount of treats they get, I figured why not try making some at home for them.

Anyone have any dog treat recipes they don't mind sharing. I'd greatly appreciate it. :)

Sorry Bonnie, I don't have any homemade ideas for you. Just a quick question. How late do you feed your dogs? If I stop feeding my chihuahua by 7:00, and take her out around 10 p.m. for a potty break, she can make it through the night.

My dogs get liver treats that Petsmart carries. I can buy a big bucket of them and they come in small portions. A bucket can last a while.

i am making some for my & my families dogs this week for christmas gifts. these are the ones i am trying:

I am using regular natural creamy peanut butter for this one. I got it from a recipe website that i have been on for almost 15 years! the person who provided it to me said the peanut butter can be used and it is a tried and true recipe.

Soy Nut Butter Dog Treats

1 1/8 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/8 cup unbleached white flour
1/2 cup organic soy nut butter (creamy natural peanut butter)
1 cup water
2 tablespoons canola oil

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Blend wheat flour and white flour in a bowl. Set aside. Combine canola oil, soy butter, and water. Add flour, one cup at a time, forming a dough. You will need to blend the final flour by hand, kneading until a nice firm ball of dough is formed. (Takes a bit of kneading.) Let ball of dough stand for about 10 minutes to allow the gluten to relax. Makes for easier rolling.

2. Roll dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a sheet of waxed paper. Cut with desired cutter. Re-roll scraps to make more biscuits. How many biscuits you get depends on the size of the cutter you use. Use a fork to poke holes in the top of each biscuit to allow the gases to escape and give you “flat” biscuits.

3. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for about 25 minutes, turning the pan a couple of times during baking. Cookies should be hard to the touch before removing from the oven. You may need to increase baking time. Do this in five minute increments.

4. Cool, then store in a zip-lock baggie on the shelf. No refrigeration necessary.

this is another one i am making. i have all the ingredients ready to go. also from the same list so the bakers personal notes are included. she also included where the recipe came from,.

Fido's Favorite Treats

Recipe By: Pillsbury Holiday Cookbook
Serving Size: 3 1/2 to 8 dozen depending on size
Categories: Dog Recipes

1 cup Rolled oats
1/3 cup margarine or butter
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons chicken or beef instant bouillon
1/2 cup milk
4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese (1 cup)
1 egg beaten
2 to 3 cups all purpose or whole wheat flour

Heat oven to 325' F. Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, combine rolled
oats, margarine and boiling water; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in
cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg; mix well. Lightly spoon
flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing
well after each addition to form a stiff dough.

On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no
longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness;
cut with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.

Bake at 325' F. for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool
completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large dog biscuits
or 8 dozen small dog biscuits.

Notes: These make great gifts to doggie friends. Cut in appropriate
holiday shapes instead of bones. Package in a festive cookie tin and
include a bone-shaped cookie cutter and a copy of the recipe for the owner.
If made ahead, store in refrigerator or freeze well-wrapped.

Last one. I thought this sounded interesting. will also be trying this one. sounds pretty easy. no one has made this one yet, so i dont have a review.

No recipe suggestions but:

If you're giving them lots of treats, especially for their small size, you may want to use their own kibble as a treat. (my dogs think a treat is a treat, kibble is just another form of treat if it's coming out of my hands) Also, kibble usually works out to be cheaper than treats.

Also, make sure if you're giving them a lot of treats (> 10% of their diet), you decrease their diet proportionally so they aren't overloaded with calories. That way you won't have rolly polly Chi's!

We were giving them a treat to go to the crate when told. I've slacked off and only give them a treat for going to their crate if they are going to be in there for a while.

But with two of them it adds up.

Then we have 3 other Chihuahua who are older and except a treat when they get up every morning and go out to do their morning business.

I've tried the dog food as a treat. They spit it out when realize it's their dog food and stare at me. lol
