I don't have an emergency, but I don't know where else to post this.
A friend has a chin with soft poo. Will smear on feet if stepped on.We both think the result was a store bought chew toy. This was the ONLY change to the chin's environment. No changes of diet or hay at that time.

Toy has been removed.
Three weeks ago this started. The owner has done a fecal. And an xray to rule out anything serious. Nothing came up. Vet says over all he cannot find anything wrong. Not dehydrated.

Animal is eating feed and hay. Drinking enough water.

I have instructed the following when this started before the vet visits. Small peices of burned toast and I gave him live acidopholis (sp?) to sprinkle a bit on the toast. No snacks. Hay heavy and continue with feed. I don't know how much toast he is using now. But I just wanted to add in the beginning we hit it hard. About once or twice a day. Thumb nail size.

She has episodes of a firmer poo. Then it goes back to the kind that is soft and will smear under foot. I had this happen to me about 3 years ago with a cheap petsmart chew toy and that is the only thing I can think what happened. Any imput would be most welcome. We are working together as a team and the chin is very happy, clean, and doing super at this point. And I buy hay from a certain good grower and he went ahead and bought that hay to give her and his other little boy chin.

Thanks everyone for your help and reading.

Pull all the feed and give nothing but hay for a week. You can give the acidophilus, but don't give shreddies, or toast, or any other "treat" type of food. Just hay, fresh water, and acidophilus/Lifeline. He will be fine on nothing but hay for a while and it will give his stomach a chance to really settle down, while giving him lots of fiber to try and regulate him again.

What kind of water is being used? If it's bottled or spring, I would switch to reverse osmosis. I brought a rescue in with loose poops. I did as above, and switched her over to reverse osmosis water, and within a week she was pooing normally.

Thank you very much for your quick attention and response.

I talked to my friend this morning and for the last couple days the poo is back to normal. I will add your advice to my personal book of remedies. Those cheap dag gone Chinese chew toys are such a danger. This is the second time I've witnessed this with a chin. First was my animal years ago and now my friends chin.

I do not buy those wood toys anymore. For the past three or four years I cut and clean and process my own apple wood. Not one single episode of this soft poo has come across in any animal of mine.

Be careful new chin owners. I don't know what they use or what the United States considers safe for our animals when they make those wood toys. I cannot state for certain that each time they are used they cause a problem. I'm thinking that there are certain animals that are "sensative" to a small degree of irritation in a product and we struggle like heck to fix it. Prior to this happening to my friend, I would NOT have put two and two together. I know better now. No petstore toys for my herd. Only from those on the forum making chin safe pine toys or homes. ( I'll plug Cat75 for those goodies )

Thank you again for your wonderful advice. Notes made.
