Hi,
Ok totally freaking out....my chin had her baby yesterday, and she is the smallest kit i have ever seen:(.. first weigh in was at 4:30= 25 gm next wiegh in was around seven= 24 gm next was around ten=26 gm. This mornings weigh in put her back at 25 gm...she is really alert, warm, tummy is warm, very active....just worried... the smallest kit i have had was 44 gm so this was a surprise. I have handfeed before so i know i can if i need to(lol im also handfeeding a puppy to so at least i am on the two hr schedule)

Mom is being very attentive and she has milk...

also has anyone else had a kit this small survive.....help im worried...i have waited for a baby from this pair for about two years:(
Thanks so much
Sheena

You'll just have to wait and see. If she's active and nursing, and mom has milk, hopefully everything will go well. There are people who have had kits this small survive, so there's always a chance. Let her have a chance to be with mom before you start worrying about hand feeding.

Don't make yourself crazy though. Pick one time a day and weigh her at that same time every day so it's an accurate reading, rather than morning, then noon, then night.

We have had them live down to as small as 17 grams, but even the full size ones do not make it sometimes. I would say that about 20% of the small ones we have born here make it.

Do most agree that under 30 grams would be considered small?
Good luck with her!

If it's just the one baby I've had a great survival rate, especially if they gain any weight at all. It's the ones that are born at 20g with 50g siblings that usually die on me.

The smallest baby I had was 18 grams (two weeks premature). He survived and is happy and healthy today. As long as mom is tending to him that's a really good sign. Often they know before we do if a kit is going to make it. If a kit has a low chance of surviving, often the mother will reject him, rather than investing energy that will probably be wasted. I wouldn't weigh more than twice per day or you'll drive yourself nuts! Good luck!

I wanted to try breeding so I did a few times. And all the kits that were born here were bout that weight and did really well. They had no problems, they were just small... So I know it's hard, but try to take a deep breath, and if they are eating, moving about and looking healthy, they will probably be fine.

best of luck to you

update:)
This evening she hit 30 gm.....so happy she is doing really good:)...thanks to everyone for their posts......ill post pics in a bit

My two little boys were both 30 and under when they were born. Pee Wee, the smallest, was only 22 grams at birth. Now a month to the day later he is 104 grams..He is still small for his age but he is gaining every day. And Kanievil was only 30 when he was born and now he's up to 140 and a little scamper...How's your kit doing? I'd say it'll be ok after the first few weeks if it keeps gaining and looks and acts healthy.

Hope your kit is doing well. If it is under mom staying warm and isn't losing weight I would not worry too much.

Probably but I actually had one born at 32 or 36g but was physically my largest, she looked like she should've been twice that.
