Hi all,

We have two male chins, Chip (3.5 years old) and Scout (3 yrs old), whom we've had since they were babies. As far as we're aware, they have never peed during playtime in the 3 years we have had them, until this past week. Now, consistently over the past week, we have noticed little puddles after playtime, and connected it to Chip from where he was when it was happening. These puddles are more than just drips, like if you emptied an eye dropper in one big spurt, and there's typically one or two each time. I thought maybe for some weird reason he was marking his territory all of a sudden, but tonight I had the horrible thought that he might have a UTI or kidney stone, although the only info I could find was that dribbling pee might indicate that. We immediately checked his penis and found no hair ring. Upon first inspection, it seemed that it was a little swollen and white at the top, but it didn't seem this way the second time when we double checked. He seems completely normal in every other way other than the pee (drinking, eating, no pee on his fur like it's just dripping, he's running around) so I think I'm probably overreacting, but i just don't get why he'd start peeing NOW, after all this time (and do it consistently as well).

We are supposed to leave for vacation tomorrow morning for 2 days, followed by another 3 day trip that starts the day after we get back. We have someone check in on them everyday to make sure get their food, ect. but if he is sick we don't want him in misery or worse while we're gone. I called out vet ASAP and they said the ER guy in call is not an exotic specialist but we can check at 7 AM about getting a quick appointment.

What does this sound like to you, Chin community? Should I rush over to the ER now despite him not being an exotics doctor? Am I freaking out over a little pee when I should be laughing? Is this likely to be something causing Chip pain/health problems such that I should cancel or delay my vacation? HELP

Since everything else seems ok - I would say, for some reason known only to him, he has decided it is ok to pee outside his cage now.

Put a pan of pine shavings down, put him in it - he may get the hint!

I had a chin with stones and he had none of those symptoms, he hid in his cage and would rub his belly on his ledge. I think maybe he is just peeing on your floor now! Mine have taken to that too.

How is his energy level?

His energy level was normal. Definitely spritely when I cued him with the familiar sound of the treat container opening. Thanks for all of your help, it has meant a lot. I will keep a close eye on him, but I think he's fine.

UPDATE

We checked on Chip the day after Christmas and he looked fine. We then went on our vacation, and heard no bad reports from those checking in on him. We got back last night however, and there was a problem. A faulty carbon monoxide detector was going off near the Chins for God knows how long, and once we realized there was no danger from the monoxide (the fire dept confirmed it was a false alarm), we noticed Chip was settled into one of the tubes. He wouldn't come out for anything, not a raisin (although he ate one when handed to him), not a dustbath, and even resisted coming out when we would touch him. This was very unusual for him, but then again, an alarm was going off in his vicinity for possibly hours, so I guess it is understandable. An hour later, I could get him to come out, but he still wouldn't stay out of the tube for any length of time, and wouldn't get in the dust bowl.

I went and checked on him later on, and he seemed more normal, running up to the cage to see me, eating hay, drinking water. I checked his feet and they all seemed fine, and i couldn't find any external wounds or scratches. He seemed normal this morning as well.

If this had happened out of the blue, I'd probably chalk it up to him just being freaked out by the alarm, but with the peeing out of the cage thing along with it, I'm starting to get freaked out. I called the vet and they said either to come by today and the ER vet will see him while consulting with the exotic vets, or come tomorrow at 11:40 est and the exotic vet will see him. Thoughts on what I should do?
