I brought home my chin on monday
She had babies this morning!
HELP ME!

Laurie, I can't help you with the baby situation, but just wanted to let you know because you are a new member you are on moderated status and your posts must be approved. I deleted the other posts you made, sorry for the delay.

Sorry Laurie, I was in the middle of answering this and Julie deleted the one I was on under emergency! <casts the evil eye on Julie>

Take a deep breath, calm down, and start with this FAQ: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21

After you read that, if you have more specific questions, please post them. It might be easier to read that than to have 100 people give you a bunch of information. That's a lot to take in when you are panicked.

Right off the bat though, be SURE you have the mom and kits in a baby safe cage, no more than 1/2 x 1 inch openings.

Where did this girl come from? A breeder or a pet store?

She came from a pet store.
The store is closing on friday and would be putting down all unsold animals.

Sorry Peggy. I actually did look what you were last viewing, it said the forum homepage so I deleted. :(

It's okay Julie, I didn't realize until AFTER I was posting that I hadn't cleared her post out of filter yet! I just felt like shooting the evil eye at somebody this morning and I chose you! :)

Laurie - What a shame about the pet store. Is there no one in your area who can take the animals in? A humane society or a rescue of some sort? Surely they won't just put them down if someone steps up to the plate, will they?

Oh i dont want to give them away, i want to keep them and take care of them.
will mom eat the babies? =s

I think Tunes was referring to the other animals in the pet store. The mom probably wont eat the babies but she may neglect them if she feels they aren't strong enough.

No, not you Laurie, the pet store. Isn't there someone who can step in and stop them from being destroyed?

Did you read the FAQ I linked to? No, they won't eat their babies. They may tear them into little bitty pieces and fling them around the cage, but they don't usually snack on them. Sometimes if a delivery is difficult, and they can't get them out, they end up pulling them apart piece by piece until they have them removed.

If you plan to keep them, be SURE you are able to accurately tell the sex of the kits, or you're going to end up having a mess again. You can keep girls with girls and boys with boys, but they must be separated no longer than 8 weeks from the day of birth or pregnancy can and will occur again.

Our humane society isnt that humane, and most of the animals were already sold.
Mom seems to be doing good.
Both the babies have open eyes and are dry, and feel warm, and do seem to have a full belly. Yes i did read the FAQ, and it was very helpful, thank you.
I did give mom a dust bath yesterday... should i do anything about that?
She is also still bleeding.
I heard noises at around 4am this morning, and it is now 11:30am
should she still be bleeding?

It's normal to have some discharge after for a little while. If it keeps going, starts to turn whitish, or have a bad odor, she'll need veterinary attention.

Editted to add - Someone told me in chat I should clarify. Mom's don't eat LIVE kits, but it has happened where they eat the torn up ones.

There should not be a lot of blood. How much is there? A few drops, a quarter sized spot?

Give her a little time if the bleeding isn't real heavy. Sometimes it can take a while for the mama to have all the kits. She could still be in labor. Just keep an eye on her and see if she delivers another one. Do you know how long it was between the firt kits born?

Tunes-Thank you for that information
Chinnie-There are small drops around her vaginal opening
Brekai-I am not to sure, i heard noises at around 4am, it is now almost 8 hours later. What are the odds that she is still in labour? are there any signs? She keeps twittering at me, if that makes any sense.

Can you GENTLY palpate her tummy and see if there are any more lumps? Odds are she's done and she's making noise at you telling you to BACK OFF from her babies. Some mom's are incredibly territorial, others easy going.

You shouldn't have given mom a dust bath so soon.
Her vaginal area hasn't had time to properly close and she may now have/be getting an infection.
DO NOT give dust baths again until it has been 10 days since delivery.
I can't offer any more information with the blood, I don't breed but I know that tid bit.

Oh i gave her one yesterday,
i did not know she was pregnant, and i wont be giving her one for another 10 days.

Ah. Alright. My other tid bit of advice would have to be get a scale, weigh the kits, make sure they're gaining weight, if not you'll have to step in and supplement.
Make sure mom has good pellets, good hay, fresh water. Did you read about the apple juice yet?
Some breeders practice not dust bathing for 10 days before delivery as well, I'm not exactly sure on what everyone does since I don't breed so I can't help you there.
What kind of feed is she getting and what kind of hay?

Shes got timothy hay, alfalfa, and chinchilla food, all in on. Ive also thrown in 2 shreddies.

How many kits did she have? If she had more than one, keep an eye out for fighting. They can really injure or kill one another if they are intent. If they start fighting you may have to rotate kits so that all can nurse in peace.

Yes, get a scale that weighs in grams (walmart has them for around $20) and weigh the babies everyday to make sure they aren't losing weight. No gain is ok. Losing is bad, and then you will have to supplement with handfeeding. You just have this one chin right? You don't have the father in there?
