Is there any way to attach fleece to a pcv pipe with out sewing? I don't sew much or have a sewing machine. My chin dislikes the hammock and loves the tubes. I had cardboard, but they are gone now. I know you can buy these, but the shipping is a nightmare. $50.00 for one at a local petstore! Help!!

Go to a linoleum store and ask for their tube inserts. They are bigger in diameter than most carpet ones. Cut to desired length. You may have to scrape some glue off.

Sewing a tube cover requires just one long seam. A seamstress would probably not charge much.

Wow, you need to look at different places for ordering.. I know I can ship one to Canada for around $11.

I heard not to use the tubes from the inside of the rolls of carpet or linoleum for the chemicals used in the process of making the carpet/linoleum, is this just a rumor?

In any case I prefer pvc because the chins don't chew it apart and if they pee in it, it doesn't ruin the cardboard.

Cardboard is not the best thing to chew, but I would doubt that chemicals would leach into it. May be true but I would like to know why and with references.

Fleece over PVC is a great way to go if you have chewers.

I have never found a 6 inch one. Only 2 inch and 4 inch. :(

Would this insert be cardboard? Rigsby devours cardboard at an alarming rate, lol! I can no longer give him any,not even TP tubes. It has to be PVC etc. I did ask a seamstress or two, but they do not seem to "get" what I am talking about. Do you know if their are on-line instructions on how to sew one?

No, the $50 is the one at my local pet store.(terrible over priced stuff for chins and they don't even have chins there!) Yours is $11 to ship, but its probably around $15 to $20 on top of that plus the dollar difference/tax/duty? It always seems to end up being $30-$50. *Sigh* I will just have to start saving my pennies, lol!

Measure the OD of the tube you want to use and add 1/2" for the seam. That is the width. Measure the length of the tube and multiply by 2 1/2. This is the length. Fold the material in half long ways and sew 1/4" in from the edge. Put sewn cover, still inside-out, down the inside of the tube. Pull edge of one end over the lip of the tube. Pull other end of cover over the opposing end of the tube and along the tube till the tube is covered and the material is tight. Adjust the amount of the cover that is pulled over the lip as necessary to get a good fit.

If they still chew the fleece, just use the plain tube. Fleece is better than most other cloth, but it is still cloth. Tubes can also be made/bought that are wood.

It's not hard to sew. Take about 24" of *quilting thread and put a needle in it. Then tie the ends together. Then go down through the cloth.....pull it through. Move over a tiny bit where the knott is on the opposite side and come up through the cloth. Repeat in a straight line across. When you get closer to the end you can cut it and tie the ends together several times. For those of us who hand sew its too hard to explain how to "tie the thread off". Practice on some old cotton cloth. Not a t-shirt. T-shirt material is too hard to practice on. Then grab up your fleece when ready. Enjoy!

* I use quilters thread because its strong.

Good thread. I don't see any reason to stay with the cardboard as opposed to PVC. Hmmm...

I can ship just the fleece cover for fairly cheap across canada. It would fit in a large envelope. If you are getting someone to make one, basically it's just a long sock with an opening on each end.

I just shipped a tube to Canada. The total was $19.86. $9 for the tube and $10.86 for shipping.

I made my tubes myself, and I don't have a sewing machine either, nor do I really sew. It's easy. I just used an oversize poster tube,, cut it to the length I wanted with a hand saw. Got some fleece and measured it to the length I needed leaving about 6 inches extra on the ends. Wrap it around the tube snugly and mark off where you need to stitch. Stitch the sides together so you have a fleece windsock looking thing, then slide it over your tube, tuck the excess into the tube and pull it out the other end. Then on the end where you can see the tube, take the 2 excess ends and put them together and pull them over the top so it stays secure, that way it's easy to take it off and wash it of needed. I didn't have any washers or bolts to hang it, so I doubled up some fleece and heavily stitched the fleece to the fleece on the tube and tied it tight to the cage. My boys love their tubes, and 2 of them took me maybe an hour tops to make. If you don't want to do that, then there are plenty of people here that make them.

Thanks, I may take you up on that. I don't sew and only have the use of one arm until I have surgery so I am no help at all, lol!

Brittney,

Thanks I used your directions to make a tinker bell fleece tube for my chin(Chin-Chi) and she loves it.
