Hi im new here, looked around for a bit and decided to join...

i just bought a female chinchilla a week or two ago from a local pet store...ive been going there for dog food and saw the chinchillas and usually just walk by...one day they had one out as a customer was taking a look...i stopped and gave her a skritch on the neck, she seemed to like it...went back few weeks later and she was still there...a week or so later i spoke to a manager there and inquired...she was approx. 8 months old, considered 'fancy' (she is beige) and had come in sick from the breeders (of course lol)...she had been there for a while, in the back while she was on medication for her illness..once she got well they brought here out into the store..they said that since she'd been there a while and also had the health issues in the beginning that they'd give me a discount on her...thought about it for a few days and went back, deciding that if she was still there then i would take her...and thats how i got her lol...Ive had chinchillas in the past but its been a while. She seems pretty friendly, she lets me pet her and i have already held her several times...Ive noticed that her poop and pee smell stronger that i remember it being from my past chins, not sure why. Im using pine, got her on mazuri and she dusts in blue cloud. Im looking to get her a chin spin or some other type of wheel, not sure which is the best now days...also havent come up with a name for her just yet (im so bad)...any suggestions? She is beige with red eyes...once I figure out how load pics, ill do some. Just glad to have found a place where i can talk chin with others and get advice when needed! :)

Welcome to CnH. We hope you enjoy your stay. :)

Just as an aside, in reference to this comment:

and had come in sick from the breeders (of course lol)..

The of course would not apply to a breeder. It applies to breaders, those we consider backyard breeders, or people who care nothing for the chins just for the money. Breeders who are serious about their chins would never, ever consider selling a sick chin to a pet store or anybody else. We would take care of them and not let them go until they were well and truly cured. I would also seriously question that the chin "came" sick from the breeders. If that had happened, I can't think of a single pet store that wouldn't have returned the chin and demanded a healthy one in return.

For your records, I would ask the pet store owner exactly what sickness the chin had, if she had seen a vet, and what treatment she was given. I would want to know so I could be aware of it in the future.

Hi and welcome! Happy to hear you have a new friend, and hopefully she will remain healthy for you. Can't wait to see pics!

Tunes~ didnt mean to offend anyone. She probably came from a chinchilla mill or something and thats what i meant by 'breeders'. I know there are responsible breeders out there too. They said her illness was respiratory and that she had seen a vet and was on meds. I guess the petstore probably didnt send her back bevause we are in Hawaii and they get shipped here and maybe they thought shipping her back wouldnt be a good idea for her with being ill and all.
