My poor Hazel has been scratching off and on for a few weeks but I thought it was just dry skin as she's had it before. I've treated her for this with baths and thought it was just coming back. Then I noticed her ear looked like it had been bleeding a tiny bit. I decided to get a piece of black cloth and pet her, trying to get some dust and what not from her quills and then checked under a bright light. Sure enough...white moving dots. :cry3:
I can't take her to the vet until Monday, due to the holiday weekend. I have read that the best treatment is Revolution. I just wonder if anyone has experienced hedgie mites and have any suggestions for home remedies?
I have read a few such as a bath in vegetable oil, oatmeal baths (also helps dry skin), and baby oil on the ears.
I use Carefresh bedding, a recycled paper kind of bedding and my rabbit uses it too. I have read it is approved for hedgies and so I use that. I used to use cellsorb plus and will resort back to it if anyone knows of mites coming in on the carefresh bedding.
I just feel so helpless. I have done so much research all night and just thought I'd try to get some help here too. She doesn't seem to be itching real bad today yet, and she does have a freshly clean cage (just done today). I plan to buy her an igloo, instead of her wooden hidey house (which she loves! *sniffs*) because I hear they are hard to disinfect.
Also, how do you all disinfect your food/water dishes? I have hard certain soaps can cause diarrhea. I usually put mine in scolding hot water for awhile, cool it down, then do the process over again. I have used mild antibacterial soap before but have always been afraid to use it too much.
Also, I plan to have the rabbit checked for mites as well. Anyone know of good treatments for him?
I'm just a worried mama and want to make sure my baby is alright....
